No. 16 Softball Earns Sweep of Iowa State on Final Day of Rebel Invitational

3/16/2025 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. – The No. 16 Ole Miss softball program polished off a sweep of the Rebel Invitational, taking both games of a doubleheader against Iowa State on Sunday afternoon at the Ole Miss Softball Stadium.

The Rebels (25-4, 2-1 SEC) rode another strong offensive performance, winning game one 9-0 in six innings, before taking game two against the Cyclones (11-14, 1-2 Big 12), 8-6.

GAME ONE | No. 16 Ole Miss 9, Iowa State 0
From the start of the afternoon, the Rebels offense was engaged and dynamic, jumping on the visitors in the first inning of game one. Persy Llamas helped drive home a run on an RBI single after Lair Beautae and Aliyah Binford both reached, making it 1-0.

The Rebels accomplished more of the same in the second inning, as Mackenzie Pickens singled and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jaden Pone. Angelina DeLeon would extend the lead with an RBI single to score Pickens and lead 2-0.

Meanwhile, the freshman Miali Guachino led the way in the circle and delivered another vintage performance. Guachino struck out the side in the third inning and had five strikeouts through three frames before her offense added on.

The Cyclones got the first two outs of the inning, but three straight singles from Llamas, Lexie Brady and Pickens loaded the bases. Pone would deliver the first run of the inning on a bases loaded walk, before Jamie Mackay reached on an error to score another run and move the line along. DeLeon and Taylor Roman would follow suit with back-to-back bases loaded walks to balloon the lead to 6-0.

Guachino continued to shine from there, eventually reaching nine strikeouts through six innings of work, while only allowing three hits. That would prove to be enough to secure the win, as a Taylor Malvin double and Beautae walk set up Binford, who walked off the game with a three-run blast in the sixth inning to end the game via run rule.

GAME TWO | No. 16 Ole Miss 8, Iowa State 6
After a walk-off loss in game one, the Cyclones responded to the adversity and struck for game two's opening run, utilizing an Ole Miss error and wild pitch, to set up an RBI single that made it 1-0.

The Rebels engineered a response in the second inning, as Brady tied the game with her team-leading ninth home run of the season on a towering blast that found its way down and over the wall in left center field. Pone would continue her big day shortly thereafter with a single and DeLeon reached on an error, before Ashton Lansdell came through with an RBI single, making it 2-1.

The lead would increase for the Rebels in the next inning, as Beautae led off the frame with a double and Binford cleared the bases with a two-run blast to make it 4-1. After another Pickens single, Pone stepped up to the plate and sped around the bases for an RBI triple, making it 5-1.

However, the Cyclones began to chip away, scoring a run in the top of the fourth inning to make it 5-2. After stranding Lansdell at third base in the bottom of the fourth, the Cyclones completed a comeback, striking for three runs on three hits and tying the game at 5-5.

After a clean inning of relief for the Cyclones' Lauren Schurman, their offense emerged with a double, a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly to take the lead in the sixth inning. Needing a response, the Rebel offense delivered.

DeLeon started the rally with a one out single, before Lansdell drew a walk and Malvin singled to load the bases. Beautae was next up and worked her way back into the count, before drawing a hit-by-pitch to tie the game at 6-6. Binford was next up and was able to generate a sharp grounder that was corralled in time for an out, but not in time to turn two, as Lansdell scored to make it 7-6. For good measure, the Rebels got insurance as a double steal by Taylor Strain and Malvin made it 8-6.

Guachino returned to the field in relief and shined to pick up her first collegiate save. Guachino struck out three batters in the inning, working around a pair of walks to close out the victory.

Ole Miss returns to action next weekend, traveling north and returning to SEC play as the Rebels face No. 23 Kentucky. The series opener is set for Friday, Mar. 21 at 5 p.m. CT and will be televised on the SEC Network.
