No. 14 Softball Drops Extra Inning Heartbreaker at Kentucky
3/21/2025 | Softball
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Despite executing a four-run rally to force extra innings, the No. 14 Ole Miss softball program couldn't complete the comeback, falling 9-6 in nine innings at Kentucky on Friday night at John Cropp Stadium.
The Rebels (25-5, 2-2 SEC) successfully erased a four-run deficit against the Wildcats (20-10, 4-3 SEC) but were downed by a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning by Kentucky's Hallie Mitchell.
As they've done so many times this season, the Rebels were the first to strike with the game's opening run in the first inning. Lair Beautae opened with a single, followed by an Aliyah Binford walk and Persy Llamas single to load the bases with one out. Lexie Brady came through, nearly dropping a ball into left field, but ultimately settled for a sacrifice fly and a 1-0 lead.
Miali Guachino took the circle for the Rebels and started strong, working out of two runners in scoring position to maintain the lead. Guachino followed that up with a 1-2-3 second inning that was punctuated by a strikeout.
The Rebels offense struck again the third inning, as Binford singled to set up Llamas. The freshman stepped up and delivered an RBI double, increasing the lead to 2-0.
While Guachino got through a scoreless third inning, the Wildcats finally struck with a three-run home run in the fourth inning to take the lead. The Wildcats added another three runs in the fifth inning to increase the lead to 6-2.
Needing a response, the Rebels answered the call, as Brady led off the sixth inning with a double. Mackenzie Pickens delivered a single in the next at-bat, before Jaden Pone drew a hit-by-pitch to load the bases. The Rebels called on Taylor Roman in a pinch-hit situation and Roman delivered off the bench, lacing a two-run double to cut the lead to 6-4.
After Angelina DeLeon reached on a fielding error, the bases were reloaded for Taylor Malvin who fought through a long at-bat to deliver an RBI single and move the line along. Beautae helped complete the comeback on the next at-bat, delivering a sacrifice fly to make it 6-6.
Brianna Lopez kept the Wildcats in check for the next few innings, delivering a pair of strikeouts in the sixth inning and stymying a scoring chance for Kentucky in the seventh inning. However, the offense was unable to get the go-ahead run across and the Wildcats would ultimately secure the win on a walk off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Ole Miss will face Kentucky again tomorrow with game two of the three game series set for 1 p.m. CT. The game will be streamed via SEC Network Plus.
