No. 16 Softball Drops Game Two to No. 1 Tennessee
4/26/2025 | Softball
OXFORD, Miss. – The No. 16 Ole Miss softball program fell in the second game of a three-game series to No. 1 Tennessee, 6-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Ole Miss Softball Stadium.
Brianna Lopez shined on her senior day for the Rebels (34-13, 10-10 SEC), matching her SEC career-high with eight strikeouts over five innings of work, but the Lady Vols (38-11, 13-7 SEC) scored four runs in the seventh inning to pull away.
The day opened with some elite pitching on both sides, as Lopez went toe-to-toe with Karlyn Pickens. Lopez opened with two strikeouts in the first inning and added two more over the next two scoreless frames.
Meanwhile, the Rebel offense sought to deliver run support and got runners into scoring position in six straight frames. In the first inning, Jaden Pone was stranded at second following a leadoff single. In the second inning, Mackenzie Pickens delivered a stinging double to left center field, but was also stranded, before Pone was left at second base in the third inning.
A fourth inning bunt single gave Tennessee their first hit, but an errant throw on the play allowed her to get to second base. That proved to be impactful for the Rebels, who got three straight outs, but a sacrifice fly allowed the go-ahead run to score, making it 1-0.
The Rebels got a leadoff single in the fourth inning from Persy Llamas and Taylor Strain advanced to second on a passed ball, but the Rebels could not take advantage of the early hit.
The Lady Vols managed to get a two-out RBI single shortly thereafter to increase the lead to 2-0, but Lopez navigated out of further trouble with her eighth strikeout of the day. Pone continued her big day with a walk and a stolen base in the bottom of the fifth, but was once again unable to score. Pone finished the day going 3-for-3 with a walk.
Some great relief work by Miali Guachino, who tallied a pair of strikeouts, kept the deficit at a manageable level. The Rebels made one more push for a rally, as Aliyah Binford and Llamas tallied singles to lead off the sixth inning, but they could not secure a run. Ultimately, the Lady Vols added four insurance runs in the seventh inning to pull away.
Ole Miss and Tennessee are back in action for the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. The game will be streamed via SEC Network Plus.
