No. 16 Softball Falls to No. 1 Tennessee
4/27/2025 | Softball
OXFORD, Miss. – The No. 16 Ole Miss softball program came up short in game three against No. 1 Tennessee, falling 7-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Ole Miss Softball Stadium.
Lair Beautae and Persy Llamas each tallied two hits for the Rebels (34-14, 10-11 SEC) who built an early advantage in front of a sold-out crowd, but could not hang on against the Lady Vols (39-11, 14-7 SEC).
Sunday got off to a promising start, as Jaden Pone drew a leadoff walk to set up Beautae. The former Lady Vol made her old school pay, lacing an RBI double to left center field for an early 1-0 lead. However, the Rebels could not add more as Beautae was thrown out at home trying to score on a Llamas grounder and contact play, and the Rebels would strand an additional two runners later in the inning.
Miali Guachino delivered a strong start through the first two frames, getting through a quick second inning thanks to a great defensive play by Ashton Lansdell who turned two on the back of a diving catch at third base.
However, the Lady Vols capitalized on a pair of walks in the third inning, as Taylor Pannell hit a three-run home run to give the visitors the lead.
Ole Miss looked for an answer, as Beautae drew a hit-by-pitch and Llamas singled to give the Rebels a chance. However, the Lady Vols danced out of trouble to keep the game at 3-1.
In the fourth inning, Lansdell drew a walk and Rachel Connors drew a hit-by-pitch to give the Rebels another great chance. Taylor Malvin put a well-placed ball over the head of the third baseman, but the Lady Vols shortstop backed her up and got the lead runner at third. That proved to be key, as Tennessee got out of the inning on the next play.
The Lady Vols would ultimately pull away, striking for three more runs in the fifth inning and another in the seventh inning to take a 7-1 lead. The Rebels would make one final push in the bottom of the seventh, as Pone roped a double that nearly got out of the park to lead off the frame and reached third base on a wild pitch, but the Rebels could not bring her home.
Ole Miss heads out on the road for the final series of the regular season, facing No. 17 Mississippi State beginning with game one on Thursday at 6 p.m. CT.
