Softball Splits Opening Day of Ragin’ Cajuns Invitational
2/15/2025 | Softball
LAFAYETTE, La. – The Ole Miss softball program split the first two games of the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational on Friday at Lamson Park.
The Rebels (5-3, 0-0 SEC) opened the day with a commanding, 10-0 win in five innings over Sam Houston (3-5, 0-0 CUSA), but would drop the finale to Louisiana (5-2, 0-0 Sun Belt), 6-5 in nine innings.
GAME ONE | Ole Miss 10, Sam Houston 0 (F/5)
After a scoreless first inning, the Rebel offense clicked and jumped all over the Bearkats. After a four-pitch walk drawn by Lexie Brady, Jamie Mackay doubled and Ashton Lansdell delivered an infield single to load the bases with no outs.
Mackenzie Pickens would step to the plate and make no mistake, as the freshman jumped on the first pitch she saw to blast a grand slam into left field and give Ole Miss a 4-0 lead. From there, starting pitcher Brianna Lopez made quick work of Sam Houston in the bottom half of the second and struck out the side.
The Rebels quickly put the game out of reach in the third, as Brady and Mackay delivered inning-opening, back-to-back home runs to increase the lead to 6-0. Lansdell and Pickens would each draw a walk and advance on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Starr, before the Rebels plated a run on a fielder's choice. The bases were promptly reloaded again, before Persy Llamas and Aliyah Binford each recorded back-to-back singles to extend the lead to 10-0.
With all the run support she could need, Lopez came back out and delivered a brilliant performance in the circle. Lopez limited the Bearkats to three hits, but recorded a complete five innings of work and struck out nine, while not allowing a walk.
GAME TWO | Ole Miss 5, Louisiana 6 (F/9)
In a matchup of two teams to compete at the same 2024 NCAA Regional, both sides got off to strong starts offensively. First pitch singles by Llamas and Binford, followed by a Brady walk got the bases loaded with one out. After hitting a grand slam in her last bases loaded opportunity, Pickens delivered once again with an RBI single off the pitcher to make it 1-0.
However, the Ragin' Cajuns recovered for two runs in the bottom half of the first inning, as small ball provided them big results. Two bunts, two singles and a wild pitch allowed the hosts to take the lead after one inning.
Lansdell kicked off the second inning with a bang, as she laced a leadoff double. The Rebels quickly got two runners in scoring position, before Llamas delivered an RBI sacrifice fly to tie the game. Binford was up next and roped a double to give the Rebels the lead. Brady would immediately follow suit with her own double, as the Rebels held a 4-2 advantage.
While Louisiana got a run back in the third inning, the Rebels had a quick response in the fourth. Jaden Pone singled and Taylor Malvin doubled to put pressure on the hosts before Binford drove in another run with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-3.
Despite the pressure by the hosts, Binford continued to excel in the circle. The senior successfully worked three straight scoreless frames before being lifted for the seventh inning, having allowed only three earned runs over six frames.
However, Louisiana was able to strike back with one out in the seventh inning and ultimately tied the game. That would force extra innings, as the Rebels entered their third extra inning game of the season.
The Rebels had a final chance to strike for runs in the ninth inning, as they loaded the bases with one out on hits by Llamas and Binford. However, the Ragin' Cajuns got out of it and were ultimately successful in walking off the game in the bottom of the ninth inning, despite a close play at first base on the final play.
Ole Miss is back in action on Saturday, as the Rebels continue play at the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational with a 10:30 a.m. CT contest against Central Arkansas.
