Softball Secures Series in Wild, Shootout Win at Auburn

The Rebels (30-21, 4-16 SEC) tallied 13 runs on 12 hits, building leads of eight and seven runs and holding off the Tigers (24-24, 3-17 SEC) in a late rally attempt. Madi George shined again, going 3-for-3 with a home run and five RBI, while Emilee Boyer came in relief to secure the save.
The day began with a bang for the Rebels, who surged out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Hits from Kennedy Bunker and Persy Llamas, as well as a hit-by-pitch on Mackenzie Pickens loaded the bases for George. George drove home the opening run with an RBI single, before back-to-back sacrifice flies from Cassie Reasner and Rachel Connors drove in two more runs.
The runs continued to pile up in the second inning. The Rebels made the Tigers pay for a leadoff error as Bunker launched a two-run home run to make it 5-0. From there, Pickens drew her second of three hit-by-pitches on the day and Llamas walked to set up George, who blasted her 21st home run of the season to make it 8-0.
The Tigers managed to get three back in the bottom half of the frame, but the Rebels quickly answered back in the third. Two more hit batters set up Llamas, who delivered an RBI single, making it 9-3. George followed it up with her own RBI single to extend the lead to 10-3.
Auburn responded with three runs in the fourth inning, but the Rebels kept them at arms-length, as Lilly Whitten entered the circle and got three key outs, before securing a scoreless fifth inning.
The Rebels attempted to put the game on ice in the sixth inning, as Laylonna Applin and Taylor Malvin each singled, before back-to-back runs came home on an error and a sacrifice fly by Llamas to make it 12-6. Another Tiger error reloaded the bases, before Reasner laced an RBI single to extend the lead to 13-6.
The hosts made one final push, scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, before the Rebels turned to Boyer. Boyer stopped the rally in sixth inning and generated three quick outs in the seventh, locking down the win with a strikeout.
The Rebels will face off against Auburn for a final time on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT. The game will be televised on the SEC Network.
