Football vs. Missouri: Practice Report

10/14/2026 | Football

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss football returns home Saturday following a dominant 52-17 road victory over Vanderbilt. The Rebels will welcome No. 13 Missouri to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium for a 2:30 p.m. CT kickoff.

Head coach Pete Golding met with reporters this week alongside offensive lineman Connor Howse, defensive back Antonio Kite and wide receiver Deuce Alexander as the Rebels prepare for Saturday's home matchup against Missouri. Coming off a bounce-back win at Vanderbilt, Ole Miss is focused on building momentum and putting together a complete four-quarter performance against a surging Tigers team featuring several familiar faces. This week's practice report is presented by Mississippi Sports & Orthopedic Center.

Building on the Bounce-Back Performance
Golding said the defense's performance against Vanderbilt reflected the work put in during the bye week, particularly the emphasis on returning to the fundamentals.

"Effort number one," he said. "And number two, the violence at the point of attack. The physicality showed up at times, and it was much more consistent."

Although Golding acknowledged there is still room for improvement, including some inconsistency in eye control against play action, he said the areas emphasized by the coaching staff showed up on film more consistently than they had earlier in the season.

He also praised the offensive line's progress, noting that all five starters were named players of the game for the first time this season.

"I think they're working well together," Golding said. "The communication's really good. The more Connor plays, the better he gets."

Preparing for the Missouri Challenge
Golding was complimentary of Missouri, describing the Tigers as one of the hottest teams in the league. He highlighted quarterback Austin Simmons' arm talent, athleticism and leadership, noting that the quarterback has shown the ability to operate within the scheme while making plays with his arm and legs.

"It's scary to know how good he is," Golding said.

"He's more athletic than you think, and he's playing within the scheme, taking what the defense gives him, and he's only turned the ball over once."

Golding also emphasized the importance of accounting for wide receiver Cayden Lee throughout the game.

"We're going to have to know where he is on every snap he's in the game for sure," Golding said.

Defensively, Golding said Missouri presents a different challenge than Vanderbilt, describing the Tigers as one of the more fundamentally sound and less aggressive units the Rebels have faced. Ole Miss will look to establish the same defensive priorities it emphasizes each week: stopping the run, creating turnovers and disrupting the opposing offense's rhythm.

Connor Howse Embraces Opportunity on the Offensive Line
Howse said earning meaningful playing time this season has accelerated his development by allowing him to identify areas for improvement through live game action.

"Getting actual live reps and understanding what I struggle with helps me going into the week of practice knowing what to work on," he said.

He also credited the veteran presence around him, specifically offensive lineman Kutas playing alongside him at guard, for providing consistency and confidence as he continues to develop.

"I'm blessed to have Kutas right next to me," Howse said. "It's just being comfortable with the guy next to you and taking rep after rep, and that's the process to become great."

Antonio Kite Focuses on Defensive Consistency
Kite said the defense is looking to build on the physicality and communication that stood out in the win over Vanderbilt. For the Rebels, the focus remains on executing at a high level and playing with the intensity needed to sustain success throughout the game.

"It was just more about us being us," Kite said. "Just executing at a high level, playing hard with heart and going out there and balling."

Kite also discussed the defense's emphasis on creating turnovers, an area the unit has worked to improve through consistent practice repetitions.

"We haven't been doing that, but we've been working on it every day at practice trying to get the ball more."

With Missouri presenting a new challenge, Kite said the defense will need to carry that emphasis into Saturday's matchup while maintaining the physicality and discipline it displayed against Vanderbilt.

Deuce Alexander Embraces Breakout Season
Alexander said he is looking forward to competing against former teammates who will line up for Missouri on Saturday. With familiar faces on the opposing sideline, the matchup brings an added element of excitement for the Rebels.

"It's going to be fun competing against those guys I was around every day," Alexander said.

Alexander also reflected on what has contributed to his breakout season, crediting offensive coordinator John David Baker's system for allowing him to use his speed and versatility in different ways.

"JDB likes to move me around a lot more and just let me showcase my speed," he said. "It just fits me more."

Familiar Faces, Same Focus
With former Rebels Simmons, Lee and Chris Graves Jr. now playing for Missouri, Golding acknowledged the unique dynamic of facing former teammates while emphasizing that the focus remains on Saturday's competition.

"We know they're all good players," he said. "A lot of our guys have really good relationships with those guys."

Kite echoed that sentiment, expecting a competitive atmosphere as the Rebels face players they know well.

"I'm going to take it as a high-level game," he said. "Especially playing against some old friends. It's going to be a lot of trash talking."

As Ole Miss looks to build on its performance at Vanderbilt, the Rebels will aim to carry that momentum into Saturday's home matchup. With Missouri arriving in strong form and familiar faces on both sides, Ole Miss will look to deliver a complete performance and continue building consistency as the season progresses.
