Binford Tallies Two Triples, Save as Softball Downs Kansas
2/8/2025 | Softball
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Behind a pair of RBI triples and a save in the circle from Aliyah Binford, the Ole Miss softball program capped off the Paradise Classic with a 5-3 win over Kansas on Saturday at the FAU Softball Stadium.
The Rebels (4-1, 0-0 SEC) got timely hitting from Binford as well as several members of the lineup, who combined for eight hits and three walks. Miali Guachino drew the start against the Jayhawks (1-4, 0-0 Big 12), striking out five over three innings. Brianna Lopez (2-0) picked up the win in relief.
Right out of the gate, the Rebels put pressure on Kansas, as the speedy Taylor Malvin reached on a throwing error. Binford would step up to the plate in the three-hole and promptly laced a triple into right center field to give Ole Miss a 1-0 lead.
After two strikeouts in the first inning, Guachino kept the Rebels in front after the Jayhawks loaded the bases with one out, earning a foul out and strikeout. However, Kansas jumped in front in the third on a two-run home run.
Nevertheless, the Rebels had a quick response in the bottom half of the inning, as Malvin singled, before Binford came through with her second triple of the game to tie the game at 2-2.
Kansas jumped back in front in the top of the fourth behind a bunt single, but Lopez managed the damage in relief of Guachino. Needing a push back, the Rebels promptly loaded the bases with one out, behind a Ryan Starr single, Lexie Brady walk and Jaden Pone walk.
Taylor Strain stepped to the plate and worked the count, winning the battle to force a bases loaded walk and tie the game. Malvin was next up and took the lead for good, delivering an RBI single to move the line along. Persy Llamas added another RBI single to create some insurance from there and give Ole Miss a 5-3 lead.
Binford took over in the circle in the sixth inning, striking out the first two batters she faced. While the Jayhawks did record baserunners in the remaining two innings, the senior pushed through the adversity to lock down the win.
Ole Miss is back in action on Wednesday, as they head south for a midweek clash at Southern Miss. First pitch is set for 6 p.m., CT and the game will be broadcasted on ESPN Plus.
