Guachino Sets Program Strikeout Record, Softball Fall at Southern Miss
2/13/2025 | Softball
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Despite a historic night in the circle for freshman Miali Guachino, the Ole Miss softball program dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker in 10 innings at Southern Miss on Thursday night at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
The Rebels (4-2, 0-0 SEC) were paced by Guachino, who set an Ole Miss single game record with 19 strikeouts, breaking the previous record of 15 that was done on four occasions. Southern Miss (2-4, 0-0 Sun Belt) managed just five hits, but got the go-ahead run in the bottom of the tenth on an RBI base knock by Natalie Taylor.
The SEC leader in strikeouts was at it again for the Rebels, as Guachino took the circle. The Pala, Calif., native opened the first inning with two strikeouts, but faced an early challenge as Southern Miss got a runner in scoring position. Nevertheless, the Rebels were able to get the final out at the plate on a strong throw by Persy Llamas and tag by Lexie Brady to keep the game level.
The Rebels nearly struck first in the second inning, but stranded a runner at third. That would not happen in the third, as Ashton Lansdell stepped up to the plate and belted a solo home run to center field for an early 1-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Guachino continued to tear through the Golden Eagles lineup, as she struck out the side in the third inning to reach seven strikeouts. Through five innings, that number increased to nine.
The Rebels had an opportunity in the sixth inning, as Aliyah Binford singled and Llamas reached on a hit-by-pitch with no one out. Both runners advanced but were ultimately stranded at second and third base.
As the Rebels entered the seventh inning, Guachino was throwing a one-hitter and got the first Golden Eagle swinging for her 13th of the night. After a hit-by-pitch, the Rebels secured the second out on a sacrifice bunt. However, an RBI single by Southern Miss helped force extra innings.
Needing a response, Ole Miss loaded the bases in the eighth inning, as Binford doubled, Llamas singled and Jamie Mackay drew a hit-by-pitch. Despite this, the Golden Eagles got out of the jam with a pair of grounders.
Guachino came back out for the eighth and picked right up where she left off, notching two more strikeouts and stonewalling any offensive momentum.
After coming into the game defensively, freshman Addison Duke looked to spark a rally. Duke led off the frame with a bunt single, then promptly stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error. However, the Rebels ultimately could not bring her home.
Now at 18 strikeouts through nine innings, Guachino came out for the tenth but gave up an early double. The freshman remained composed and struck out the next batter. After a pop out, the Rebels were one out away from the 11th inning, but a timely single from Taylor would end the game.
Ole Miss returns to action tomorrow with a pair of games, as they open the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational in Lafayette, La. The Rebels will face Sam Houston at 2 p.m. CT, and Louisiana at 7 p.m. CT.
