Elliott Dominates as Baseball Takes Down No. 21 Arizona In Season Opener
2/14/2025 | Baseball
ARLINGTON, Texas – Ole Miss Baseball picked up their first win in their first game of the season Friday evening taking down No. 21 Arizona 2-1. The Rebels have now won five-consecutive season openers and 14 of their last 15.
Hunter Elliott returned to the mound in dominant fashion, pitching five shutout innings in his first start since April 2023. He allowed just two hits and struck out three batters on his way to his first win since the 2023 season opener against Delaware.
In his first game as a Rebel, Isaac Humphrey went 2-for-3 with a solo home run that would prove to be the difference for Ole Miss. Luke Hill also had a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and an RBI.
Connor Spencer picked up the save, his eighth as a Rebel, getting the final four outs of the game.
Elliott was the story of the day, giving up a couple of baserunners early, but finding his groove late. He allowed a couple of baserunners through the first three innings, even picking one off in the top of the third after issuing a walk, but none of them came around to score. He sat the Wildcats down in order in both the fourth and the fifth innings, using just 15 pitches combined.
The run support wouldn’t come along until the fifth inning as Brayden Randle led things off with a four-pitch walk and then proceeded to steal second base. Campbell Smithwick moved him over to third with a fly ball to center field and Hill brought him home with a fly ball to right field for the first run of the game.
After Ole Miss went up 1-0, Humphrey launched the first pitch he saw into the seats in right field for a 414.5-foot solo home run to make it 2-0.
Mason Morris came out of the bullpen in the sixth inning and worked two scoreless frames before giving up a solo home run to Arizona’s Mason White with two outs in the eighth.
Spencer would take the ball with four outs to go, keeping the Wildcats off the board and locking down the Rebels’ first win of 2025.
Ole Miss will face another ranked team tomorrow night as they play No. 19 Texas in their second game of the Shriners Children’s College Showdown.
