Rebels Drop Egg Bowl Heartbreaker, 21-20
STARKVILLE, Miss. -- A handful of freshmen delivered strong performances in their first career Egg Bowl and a thrilling final possession delivered excitement for the packed Davis Wade Stadium, but Ole Miss Football was outlasted by rivals Mississippi State, dropping a heartbreaking 21-20 finale to conclude their 2019 campaign.
Freshman signal caller John Rhys Plumlee became the sixth Rebel to surpass 1,000 rushing yards in a single-season, after registering 34 rushing and totaling 155. Classmate Jerrion Ealy posted 114, helping to tally 384 total yards for Ole Miss compared to MSU's 318.
The Rebels broke into MSU territory on their opening drive as the rookie duo of Plumlee and Ealy combined for 38 yards before a fumble quickly flipped the momentum to the Bulldogs.
Mississippi State rode that momentum, using four plays on a 72-yard drive with senior running back Nick Gibson coasting 27 yards to give MSU the 7-0 lead. The Bulldogs continued to control the tempo, doubling their lead to open the second quarter on 13 plays and 74 yards.
The Rebels finally broke through on the following march, using a Plumlee-Elijah Moore connection to get Ole Miss near midfield. After a small Ealy run, another pass from Plumlee (this time to fellow frosh Dannis Jackson) delivered their second first down of the drive.
Plumlee found junior Braylon Sanders to keep the ball moving downfield, and after a pair of runs from yet another freshman on the drive in wide receiver Snoop Conner, Plumlee took a short dash to the end zone.
Ole Miss evened the score on their next drive as the trio of Plumlee, Moore, and Ealy worked their magic down field from the Bulldogs' 49, culminating with a six-yard trot from Ealy.
After being shut down by MSU to open the second half, the Rebel defense forced a key three-and-out, followed by a Moore recovery of a muffed punt to bring some energy into the Ole Miss offense.
From there, the Rebels threatened, tallying four first downs on a five minute, 11-play drive, but the Bulldogs capitalized on a fumble and scored seven plays later to regain the lead at 21-14.
A sequence of six straight rushes from the freshman trio of Plumlee, Ealy, and Conner attempted to push the score even once more, but the plan was thwarted on a three-yard rush for loss to close out the quarter.
After being limited to just seven yards in their opening possession of the fourth, and time continuing to wind down, the Rebels brought in redshirt freshman quarterback Matt Corral, who met the awaiting arms of junior Dontario Drummond for back-to-back passes, quickly moving the ball down 50 yards for the Rebs and into the Bulldog 25.
Things were nearly knotted up, as Corral tossed a strike towards yet another frosh in wide receiver Jonathan Mingo deep in the red zone, but MSU's Marcus Murphy picked the pass for an interception and the Bulldogs proceeded to push the clock, using over four minutes on their next possession.
MSU gained just 27 yards on the attempts before a sack from sophomore Jacquez Jones brought the Rebels to take their first timeout of the half, with a little over just two minutes remaining. Forcing a Bulldog punt, Ole Miss began its drive at the 18 with 2:06 showing.
A Corral-Sanders connection was flagged for ineligible downfield, and a string of incompletions added pressure to the Ole Miss offense before Corral found a streaking Sanders for 57 yards on fourth-and-24 with under a minute to go.
A reception from Mingo with just 28 ticks on the clock set the Rebels up on the nine-yard line after Mingo was able to get out of bounds. A series of flags ensued on the next three snaps. Ole Miss thought they had a touchdown in the corner of the end zone but an offsides penalty had been called prior to the snap, giving the Rebels first-and-goal at the four. Moments later, a pass interference call on MSU put the ball at the two-yard line.
Corral attempted to run it in himself on first down but was halted at the line of scrimmage, forcing Ole Miss' final timeout. An incomplete pass, batted down by Bulldog lineman Willie Gay Jr., set up third-and-goal.
With just four seconds remaining in regulation, Corral connected with Moore for a touchdown and the Rebels looked poised to force overtime. Following the touchdown, a penalty was issued to Moore for unsportsmanlike conduct, resulting in pushing the extra-point attempt back 15 yards. The kick failed, delivering a heartbreaking one-point loss to the Rebels on the 92nd "Battle of the Golden Egg".
