Joe Judge joined the Ole Miss staff ahead of the 2024 season as a senior analyst, and was elevated to assistant coach for the 2025 season where he will coach the Rebel quarterbacks on Lane Kiffin’s staff.

Judge spent 12 seasons in the professional coaching pool, beginning his NFL journey as a special teams assistant for the New England Patriots and Bill Belichick in 2012. He remained in New England until 2019, helping guide the Patriots to three Super Bowl victories. During his tenure with New England, he assisted Matthew Slater to a pair of First-Team All-Pro nods and eight Pro Bowl appearances as a special teams player.

Under Judge’s tutelage, kicker Stephen Gostkowski led the NFL in scoring four times and was elected to the Pro Bowl in 2013, 2014 and 2015. With 156 points in 2017, Gostkowski became the first player in NFL history with five 150-point seasons.

In 2019, Judge was both the Patriots’ special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach, the only NFL coach to hold those positions concurrently. That season, the Patriots finished in the top 10 in the NFL in three significant special teams categories – punt return (8.0), punt coverage (6.3) and kickoff coverage (20.9).

His work with the Patriots earned him his first head coaching gig in 2020 for the New York Giants. He became only the second NFL head coach to have been hired directly from a special teams coaching job, following Kansas City’s Frank Gansz (1987).

Judge guided the Giants to a 4-2 record against NFC East rivals in 2020, the team’s best mark since 2016. Judge put forth a top-15 defense in in NFL during the 2020 season, while establishing a strong rushing attack. The Giants eclipsed 100 yards on the ground in seven consecutive games, their longest streak since they hit the century mark in nine straight games in 2010.

Judge returned to New England in in 2022 as an offensive assistant and quarterbacks coach, before moving up to the assistant head coach role. Under Judge’s guidance in 2023, Mac Jones finished with a 65.2 completion percentage, his second straight season with a pass completion of at least 65 percent. Jones, Justin Herbert and Joe Burrow are the only players to accomplish that feat in their first two NFL seasons.

Prior to his time in the NFL, Judge also found success in in the collegiate ranks, claiming two BCS National Titles in 2009 and 2011 as a special teams assistant under Nick Saban at Alabama. He helped the Crimson Tide to a perfect 14-0 record in 2009, bringing Alabama its first national title since 1992.

At Alabama, Judge’s special teams units boasted a First-Team All-American kicker and Groza Award finalist (Leigh Tiffin, 2009), a First-Team All-American return specialist (Javier Arenas, 2009), an SEC All-Freshman team punter (Cody Mandell, 2010) and a returner, who finished his career ranked second all-time in NCAA return yards (Arenas).

In 2005, Judge joined his alma mater, Mississippi State, as a graduate assistant. He then spent 2008 as the linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Birmingham-Southern.

As an undergraduate, Judge played four seasons with the Bulldogs, earning three letters. He was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll and made the Dean’s List. His knowledge of special teams originated at Mississippi State, where he primarily spent time as a holder and punt protector while serving as the backup quarterback.

Judge and his wife, Amber, have four children – Sean, Michael, Emma Riley and Ella Grace. Judge’s son Sean plays football at Ole Miss.
