Volleyball Drops Invitational Finale to LMU

OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss volleyball program battled back from an early dropped set, but could not complete the comeback, falling 3-1 to LMU on Sunday afternoon at the Gillom Athletics Performance Center.
The Rebels (2-1, 0-0 SEC) recovered from a first set loss to tie the match up at a set apiece, but were unable to hold off the Lions (3-0, 0-0 WCC) from there.
Shayla Meyer led the way for the Rebels for a third consecutive day, tallying 19 kills on .364 hitting, while adding four digs. Cameron Bradley shined defensively, recording a career-high 30 digs and adding five assists. Jaidyn Hartsfield tallied a career-high 14 kills on .265 hitting, while Vivianna Samaniego notched a career-high 46 assists and added 11 digs.
Both sides came out of the gates quickly, with just one hitting error over the first 21 points. Carly Paugh was an immediate spark plug for the Rebels, tallying three kills to build a 12-10 lead. However, the Lions surged to mount a 9-1 run, taking control of the opening set. A late 4-0 run with two emphatic blocks from Paugh and Jorda Crook were ultimately not enough, as the Rebels fell, 25-20.
The Rebels mounted an immediate response in the second set, building an 8-5 lead behind four kills from Meyer. Despite a few errors, LMU wouldn't let the set get out of hand, tying the match at 8-8. Both teams did not let each other get an upper hand, as they would tie five times after that point with LMU taking a 15-14 lead into the media timeout. However, the Rebels got a pair of key kills from Paugh and timely serving from Samaniego and Bradley to retake the lead. As the pressure built, the Rebels earned a set point off a kill from Paugh, making it 24-23. The Lions fought back, saving three match points, before a kill from Hartsfield and an LMU error ended the set in the Rebels favor, 28-26.
Just like the first two sets, the third set was no different with multiple ties and lead changes in a very evenly matched frame. Ole Miss would slowly try to pull away after recording a 4-0 run to take a 16-12 lead, but the visitors had an answer. LMU quickly rallied to tie the match at 17-17 and after trading points, the Lions delivered an emphatic 5-0 run to take a 24-19 lead. LMU would clinch the set from there at 25-20.
The Rebels got off to a very promising start in the fourth set, building a 6-2 lead behind multiple kills from Meyer. LMU surged back in front 13-11, but the Rebels appeared to regain control, building a 17-14 advantage behind two more kills from Meyer. However, the Lions were able to make one final push, delivering a decisive 7-0 run that defeated any rally attempt, as the Lions secured the match with a 25-22 win.
The Rebels are set to hit the road, competing in the 2026 Allstate Big Ten/SEC Challenge. The Rebels will travel to Norman, Okla., on the campus of Oklahoma for two matches against the Big Ten, beginning with a 5 p.m. CT clash against Ohio State.
