OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss volleyball program was unable to get sustained momentum going, falling 3-0 to Oklahoma on Friday afternoon at the Gillom Athletics Performance Center.
Melia Johnson paced the offense, tallying nine kills and no errors on .563 hitting to lead the Rebels (8-15, 2-10 SEC). Despite the program's highest hitting percentage in SEC play since October 16 against Georgia, the Rebels could not hold off the Sooners (12-9, 5-7 SEC) offense.
Both offenses got off to strong starts on the day, but each side were buried by service errors. The two sides combined for nine service errors in the frame, as Oklahoma built a 17-13 lead. The Rebels offense was balanced, with Johnson, Shayla Meyer and Jorda Crook all factoring in. However, a strong run of serve from Alyssa Flack of the Sooners propelled the visitors to a late 4-0 run and ultimately the first set, 25-18.
The Sooners seized the momentum from the first and built a large advantage in the second set, emerging from the technical timeout with a 15-4 lead. A pair of blocks by Johnson and strong swings from Meyer helped soften the blow, as Ole Miss cut the lead to 20-12, but the Sooners would go on to take the set, 25-16.
Much like last weekend, the Rebels came out of the gate in the third set with renewed energy. Johnson took over, tallying four kills, while Meyer remained active on offense and defense with a pair of key swings, as the Rebels had the match tied at 13-13. Johnson added two more big swings, while Crook contributed her third kill of the set, but the Rebels started to sink into a narrow deficit, trailing 21-17 late. Ultimately, the Sooners finished the set on a 4-0 run, stifling the Rebel response, 25-17.
The Rebels will wrap up the home schedule on Sunday, welcoming Arkansas to town. The match is set for 2 p.m. CT and will be streamed via SEC Network Plus.
