OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss soccer suffered its first loss of the season, falling 3-1 to No. 24 Memphis on Thursday night at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
Ole Miss (4-1-0) created the first opportunity of the match in the second minute when Alena Watts placed a shot on goal, but Memphis goalkeeper Ava Galani made the save.
The Tigers (2-2-0) opened the scoring at the 8:22 mark as Ai Kitagawa converted a pass from Evelyn Mackay. Memphis doubled its advantage three minutes later when Mackay found the back of the net off an assist from Ellis Kelly.
Teaghan Irvin entered the match in the 23rd minute and needed less than six minutes to make an impact. Audrey Shackelford set up the freshman for the lone Rebel goal at the 27:47 mark, cutting the Memphis lead to 2-1. The goal marked the first of Irvin's collegiate career, while Shackelford collected her second assist of the season.
Memphis carried its one-goal advantage into halftime after holding an 11-3 edge in shots during the opening 45 minutes.
Ole Miss increased its pressure after the break, recording seven second-half shots. Isabella Pontieri and Irvin each placed attempts on frame during the opening 24 minutes of the period, but Galani denied both opportunities.
The Tigers extended their lead in the 76th minute when Abby Forsgren converted an assist from Kitagawa to make it 3-1.
Memphis finished with a 20-10 edge in shots and placed eight attempts on goal compared with five for Ole Miss. Taylor Prigge recorded a season-high five saves for the Rebels.
Ole Miss remains at home to face ULM on Sunday at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.
