Football Practice Report: Rebels Prepare for Louisville as Fall Camp Winds Down
8/21/2026 | Football
OXFORD, Miss. – As fall camp begins to wind down, Ole Miss is turning its attention toward game preparation as the Rebels enter mock game week ahead of their season opener against Louisville on Sept. 6 in Nashville. Coming off their first scrimmage of camp, Ole Miss is using the final stages of preseason practice to fine-tune execution, communication and assignments on both sides of the ball as the Rebels prepare to build on a historic 2025 campaign.
The Rebels enter the 2026 season ranked No. 9 in the Associated Press preseason poll after making the program's first College Football Playoff semifinal appearance and recording the first 13-win season in school history. With expectations high and the season opener less than three weeks away, Ole Miss will begin to simulate its regular-season routine and continue preparing for its matchup with the Cardinals.
The Rebels also heard from several defensive players as Tah'j Butler, Jonathan Maldonado, Blake Purchase, and Edwin Joseph spoke with the media Friday. The group discussed their individual development throughout fall camp, the depth and competition across the defense and the progress the unit has made as Ole Miss continues preparing for the start of the season.
Butler embracing new opportunity at Ole Miss
After spending his first two seasons at Georgia Tech, Butler said he felt Ole Miss offered the right opportunity for him to take the next step in his career. A conversation with Pete Golding and a closer look at the Rebels' defensive scheme helped make the decision easier.
"Once I came on my visit, like watching the film, going over their scheme, I felt like it was going to fit me well, which I feel like it do. I could play more downhill and more physical."
Butler also had a familiar face in Corey Adams, his former high school teammate and close friend, already in Oxford.
"I went to Ednik High School with Cory Adams. So, he was one of my best friends. So, shoot. It was really that that was part of it as well."
Butler continuing to develop within the defense
Since arriving in the spring, Butler has focused on learning the responsibilities of the entire defense while becoming more comfortable in his own role. He said that understanding how each position fits together has allowed him to play faster.
"I would really say just having a better understanding of the defense, like the defensive lineman, the secondary responsibilities, and also like my job as well, so I can be able to play as fast as I can."
Butler believes the Rebels are continuing to make progress as a defensive unit, particularly with the talent up front.
"I love the front seven, the defensive line. Amazing. Best defensive line I played in front of."
Building chemistry in the linebacker room
Butler has also embraced the leadership within Ole Miss' linebacker room, pointing to the work ethic of the group as it prepares for the upcoming season.
"We all just came in, we was able to become leaders here, you know, do what we do, work hard, be the hardest we could be, and just try to be the best we could be for the team."
As the Rebels move closer to the season opener, Butler said the defense's focus remains on continuing to improve one day at a time.
"I feel like once that time come, like once they keep taking it one step, one day at a time, we go they go get there for sure."
Maldonado making strides as fall camp progresses
Maldonado said he has made significant progress since the spring, becoming more comfortable within the Rebels' defensive scheme and developing a better understanding of where he needs to be on the field.
"I definitely think I've taken strides since the spring. It's been a long process. So, just being in the building every day with the same guys and same scheme, stuff like that. Just working with the coaches, too."
The fifth-year senior has also continued to develop physically, saying he feels stronger and faster after adding weight during the offseason.
"I mean I feel good. I feel strong. Feel fast. And it's been great. It's been a great process."
Depth gives Ole Miss defensive line confidence
Maldonado believes the Rebels' defensive line has come together well heading into the season, pointing to the variety of skill sets throughout the group. The ability to rotate multiple players and keep fresh legs on the field has been a major strength.
"I think it's looking dangerous. I think it's looking real dangerous, especially with just the depth we have."
With a deep group of pass rushers capable of bringing different styles, Maldonado believes the defensive line can consistently put pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
"You can just rotate guys in and having fresh legs over and over again rushing that passer, especially with the guys we have. I'm telling you, it's looking dangerous."
Maldonado impressed by young defensive linemen
As one of the veteran players in the room, Maldonado has also taken notice of the development of Ole Miss' young defensive linemen. He specifically highlighted Landon Barnes, Carmelow Reed and Jayden Curtis for the progress they've made since arriving on campus.
"I think all three of them, they're some dogs, man. That freshman class they came and recruited. They're making some noise and I'm learning from them just as much as they're learning from me."
Maldonado said the freshmen have continued to gain confidence throughout the summer and fall camp, already looking more experienced than their class designation might suggest.
"Just seeing the jump they had from this summer to fall camp and how they're moving now, it just looks like they're not even freshman, man. They're out there balling and they're getting more confident by the day."
Immersing Himself in the Defense
Purchase said his biggest growth from the spring to fall camp has been his understanding of the defensive playbook. With the spring under his belt, he feels much more comfortable playing fast and knowing exactly what his responsibilities are each snap.
"I feel like I really immerse myself in the playbook. It's like being able to have spring under my belt and really feel comfortable on what I'm doing every play."
Developing as a Pass Rusher
Purchase enters the season with confidence in his ability to make an impact off the edge, while also emphasizing the improvements he has made against the run and in recognizing formations. He credited his speed, different pass-rush moves and increased football knowledge as areas that have helped his game develop.
"Just be able to get off the edge, speed off the ball and just have a lot of different moves I could use at the top of the rush."
Deep Defensive Line Creating Competition
Purchase believes Ole Miss has plenty of depth along the defensive front, with multiple players capable of contributing. He also pointed to the daily competition against the Rebels' offensive tackles as a major factor in his own development heading into the season.
"We got a deep D-line. You could probably just go from top to bottom. The front going to be good."
Fresh Start at Ole Miss
Joseph said his decision to transfer to Ole Miss was largely about getting a fresh start and finding a program where he felt valued. After visiting Oxford, he felt the coaching staff's investment in him showed that the Rebels were the right fit.
"A chance to get respected again, a new chance to earn strikes again, just restart fresh with a coaching style, with a fan base, with a new family just to make plays for."
He said a late-night conversation with Coach Neighbor during his visit particularly stood out and gave him confidence in the program's commitment to him.
"Coach Neighbor stayed with me. So, I took that as like a sign of how much they respected me, how much they valued me."
Back to 100 Percent
After missing the spring while dealing with an injury, Joseph said he has returned to fall camp feeling fully healthy and has enjoyed getting back on the field. He believes being able to watch the spring from the sideline gave him confidence that he could make an impact once he returned.
"I feel great. I feel 100%. It feels great to be back out there, playing football, making plays."
Joseph has also embraced the opportunity to move around the secondary, spending time at multiple positions as he continues to learn the defense.
"They definitely been moving us around all throughout the safety room. ... I've kind of been all over the place enjoying learning all parts of the defense."
Confidence in the Safety Room
Joseph believes the Rebels' safety group has the potential to be one of the best units he has been a part of, pointing specifically to the trust and reliability within the room. He said knowing his teammates will handle their responsibilities allows everyone to play with greater confidence.
"I think this is probably the best group I've been a part of since probably high school."
That confidence comes from the relationships within the room and the ability to rely on teammates to be where they are supposed to be on every play.
"I know I got a lot of people I could depend on. ... To be able to rely on a couple people to do actually do their jobs and them actually doing it, it's been a big difference."
