Baseball Wins Series Over Texas A&M on Senior Day

OXFORD, Miss. โ No. 20 Ole Miss and No. 9 Texas A&M split a Saturday doubleheader at Swayze Field as the Aggies won the first game 18-5 and the Rebels claimed the nightcap, 6-5.

On Friday night, Ole Miss won 5-3. With the series win, the Rebels are 34-18 on the season and 14-13 in Southeastern Conference play. Texas A&M is 37-12 and 16-10. It marks consecutive series wins for the Rebels, after they won the 2024 series 2-1.

After Taylor Rabe got the Aggies three up and three down in each of the first two innings, Hayden Federico doubled in the bottom of the second, followed by an Austin Fawley home run to center field for his 10th of the season. Topher Jones then homered to center field and the Rebels led 3-0.

Rabe got the Aggies out quickly again, with just a one-out single by Ben Royo. Ole Miss added to its lead in the bottom of the third with a Federico two-out walk and a Collin Reuter home run to left. Ole Miss led 5-0 through three.

The Aggies then had a big inning, scoring five runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game. Ole Miss stuck with Rabe and it paid off. The Rebel starter went six innings, with 106 pitches, allowing just those five runs on six hits with 14 strikeouts and no walks. It's the most strikeouts by a Rebel since Doug Nikhazy had 16 in 2021 against Florida State.

Rabe's performance, paired with Hunter Elliott's 11-strikeout evening on Friday, Ole Miss now has a pitcher duo to fan at least 10 runners in a series since Nikhazy and Gunnar Hoglund did so against Princeton in 2020.

The Rebels scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh. Dom Decker walked with one out and stole second base with two outs. A Judd Utermark single between second and third to left field scored Decker, and that would ultimately prove to be enough for the victory. However, Texas A&M had two more at-bats. The Rebels had to find six more outs to get the victory.

They turned first to Hudson Calhoun, who allowed one hit in the eighth, by Caden Sorrell, but no runs. Calhoun also had a strikeout.

Then Walker Hooks came in for the top of the ninth. The Rebel closer allowed only one hit - Royo single again. But with one out, Hooks got Wesley Jordan to ground into a double play to end the game with the Rebels still up a run. Royo had four of the Aggies' nine hits in game two.

The Rebels' Robertson (3-1) got the win while A&M reliever Clayton Freshcorn (2-2) got the loss. Hooks got his second save of the series and his seventh of the season.

In game one earlier in the day, Ole Miss starter Cade Townsend sent the Aggies to the dugout three up, three down in each of the first two innings. But a five-run Aggie top of the third, on two solo home runs and a three-run homer, gave Texas A&M a lead they never relinquished.

Ole Miss scored three runs in the bottom of the third on a Utermark two-RBI double and a Federico RBI single. However, the Aggies added four more in the top of the fourth to stretch their lead to six runs at 9-3.
