5/8/2025 | Softball
ATHENS, Ga. – The No. 18 Ole Miss softball program marches on at the SEC Tournament, as the Rebels are set to face No. 3 Texas in the quarterfinal round on Thursday at 4 p.m. CT at Jack Turner Stadium.
The Rebels (37-16, 11-13 SEC) enter after a 1-0 victory over Missouri in round one and a 6-3 win in eight innings over No. 4 Florida in round two to face the Longhorns (45-9, 16-8 SEC) who are making their SEC Tournament debut.
HOW TO FOLLOW
In a wild, back-and-forth affair that saw the Gators erase a seventh inning deficit but ultimately saw the Rebels pull away for good in extra innings, Ole Miss took down No. 4 Florida, 6-3 in eight innings.
The freshmen were the start of the show, as Persy Llamas hit a three-run home run in the third inning and Mackenzie Pickens hit the go-ahead three-run blast in the eighth inning to propel the offense. Brianna Lopez started the game and came back in to get the save, throwing a combined 4.1 innings pitched, allowing just three hits and one run, while striking out six.
SCOUTING TEXAS
One of the top teams all season, the No. 3 Texas Longhorns enter their first-ever SEC Tournament, holding a 45-9 overall record and 16-8 mark in conference play as they seek a sustained postseason run.
Head coach Mike White has had the Longhorns in and out of the No. 1 overall ranking for much of the season and enter the weekend on the heels of a season-ending sweep of Kentucky.
A diverse, powerful and versatile offense, the Longhorns are led by Reese Atwood, who is hitting .409 with 17 home runs and 68 RBI. Atwood is one of five Longhorns hitting over .400 this season, led by Mia Scott who is hitting .435 with seven home runs and 52 RBI. Joley Mitchell (13 home runs, 51 RBI) and Katie Stewart (13 home runs, 70 RBI) are other key power threats.
The Longhorns feature one of the top pitchers in the nation in Teagan Kavan, who is 21-4 with 2.24 ERA (146.2 IP) and 183 strikeouts. However, the Longhorns have a number of ways to win in the circle, as Citlaly Gutierrez (9-1, 2.32 ERA) and Mac Morgan (9-3, 2.95 ERA) are key contributors.
The Rebels will be matching up against the Longhorns for the first time since Texas joined the SEC and the first time since 2021. The Rebels will also be Texas' first ever opponent in the SEC Tournament.
