No. 17 Softball Falls in Game Two at No. 18 Mississippi State

5/2/2025 | Softball

STARKVILLE, Miss. – The No. 17 Ole Miss softball program dropped game two at No. 18 Mississippi State, falling 3-0 on Friday afternoon at Nusz Park.

Miali Guachino got the start for the Rebels (34-16, 10-13 SEC), going five innings and striking out three, but the Bulldogs (37-15, 13-10 SEC) jumped ahead in the fourth inning and didn't look back.

For the second straight game, both pitchers held the other side scoreless through the first three frames, as Guachino battled Delainey Everett. The freshman Guachino picked up two early strikeouts and worked around some walks to keep the Bulldogs in check.

In the third inning, Angelina DeLeon nearly had the game's first run, blasting a ball to the warning track, but the ball was pulled back over the wall by Mississippi State's Sierra Sacco.

The Rebels nearly struck again, this time to lead off the fourth inning as Jaden Pone doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch to open the game. However, the Rebels stranded her at third, despite a Lexie Brady hit-by-pitch to keep the inning alive.

Mississippi State would ultimately strike first in the fourth inning with some small ball. A hit-by-pitch, sacrifice bunt and wild pitch moved a runner into scoring position. The Bulldogs got a weak grounder off the bat of Sierra Sacco and the play at home was not in time, allowing the first run of the day. The Bulldogs added another on a sacrifice fly, but Guachino capped them at two runs from there.

A solo home run by Mississippi State's Jessie Blaine extended the lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning. Despite a single from Aliyah Binford in the sixth inning, the Rebels were largely held off the bases for the remainder of the game, despite a deep fly ball to left by Brady that was snagged just off the wall.

Ole Miss wraps up the three-game series against Mississippi State on Saturday at 5 p.m. CT. The game will be televised on the SEC Network.
