No. 19 Softball’s Rally Falls Short in Finale vs. Missouri

3/31/2025 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. – Despite nearly erasing a seven-run deficit, the No. 19 Ole Miss softball program dropped the finale to Missouri, 9-5, on Monday night at the Ole Miss Softball Stadium.

The Rebels (28-7, 5-4 SEC) responded to an early 7-0 deficit with 13 total hits, but couldn't erase the Tigers (19-18, 2-7 SEC) advantage and complete a series sweep.

The visitors opened up the evening on fire, striking for six runs in the first inning, before adding a seventh run in the second inning. Facing a big deficit, the Rebels delivered a response in the bottom half of the second.

Persy Llamas drew a hit-by-pitch to set up Lexie Brady. Brady's enormous season continued, as she laced a home run off the left center field scoreboard, cutting the lead to 7-2.

Later in the frame, Jaden Pone singled and Angelina DeLeon drove her home with the second home run of the inning to cut the deficit down to just 7-4. Taylor Malvin followed that up with a walk, before back-to-back singles from Lair Beautae and Aliyah Binford helped bring another run home and make it 7-5.

Llamas then reached for the second time in the frame to reload the bases and set up Brady. Brady nearly recorded her second home run of the inning, as her tall fly ball to right field was snagged on the warning track to end the inning.

The Rebels pressed for more runs in the fourth inning, as Beautae delivered a two-out bunt single, before Binford also singled to set up Llamas. The freshman nearly drove in another run, as her single sent Beautae home, but Binford was tagged out at third base before the run scored to end the rally.

Missouri responded in the top of the fifth inning, as they capitalized on some defensive mistakes to score two more runs and make it 9-5.

With one more great opportunity, the Rebels nearly tied the game in the sixth inning. Beautae was hit by a pitch, Binford singled and Llamas singled to load the bases with one out. After Missouri drew a short pop up, Mackenzie Pickens stepped in. The freshman worked the count to 3-1, before driving a ball that was snared just off the edge of the wall by the Tigers center fielder and just inches away from a game-tying grand slam.

That would be enough for the Tigers, who stifled any further attempt to come back, despite a leadoff single from Pone in the seventh.

Ole Miss returns to action on Friday, as the Rebels are set to travel to No. 10 South Carolina to open a three-game series. The Rebels and Gamecocks will open up for a 5 p.m. CT.
