Women’s Tennis Wrangled No. 13 Texas for Ranked Win

3/23/2025 | Women's Tennis

AUSTIN, Texas – Ole Miss women's tennis team secured an electric 4-2 victory against No. 13 Texas on Sunday in Austin.

The Rebels (10-8, 3-6 SEC) reached its fifth consecutive season of double-digit wins. The ranked win marks the 20th season with at least 10 regular season wins under head coach Mark Beyers in his 24 seasons at the helm.

The Rebels began doubles against a strong Texas (10-8, 4-5 SEC) lineup. In the battle of the rankings, No. 71 Anaëlle Leclercq-Ficher and Ludmila Kareisová proved themselves over No. 27 Ariana Anazagasty-Pursoo and Ashton Bowers. The 6-4 upset marked the highest ranked win for the duo this season.

Tied at one each, the doubles point lay in the hands of court three. Rebel pairing Emily Welker and Alice Soulié acquired a 6-5 lead against the Longhorns, to then secure the advantage after a 7-5 final.

Singles began with a bang, and momentum stayed in favor of the Rebels. Welker, Kareisová and Soulié all carried their triumphs over to singles, with a first set win on each respective court. In her second ranked win of the day, Kareisová earned a dominant 6-3, 6-3, final score against No. 54 Eszter Meri.

Two Longhorns responded to match the score two apiece, as well as force a third set against Soulié on court four.

By no surprise, Welker commanded her court from start to finish and claimed her first ranked singles victory of her collegiate career. The German native celebrated a 6-4, 7-5, nail-biter to regain the lead for Ole Miss.

Coming down to the final two courts, Emma Kette forced a third set comeback on the back half of the lineup. The stellar junior came back after a 2-6 set one and reclaimed her fame in a 7-5 fight.

In dominant fashion, freshman Soulié completed a strong comeback after letting the second set fall short. Against Charlotte Kempenaers-Pocz, Soulié only gave up one game in the third set, after which she proceeded to win six games in a row. The freshman would clinch the game as the Rebels reentered the column with a 4-2 final score.

Kette's match would go unfinished in the third after Soulié's clutch move.

Ole Miss will look to ride its momentum as it gets back on the road for the first match of next week's two meetings, where it will meet Missouri in Columbia on March 28. Ole Miss is back at home the following Sunday, March 30, when Vanderbilt comes to Oxford.
