Softball Opens New Era With Shutout of McNeese

2/26/2025 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss softball program extended their win streak to eight straight games, earning a 4-0 win over McNeese, as the Rebels opened the brand-new Ole Miss Softball Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Rebels (13-3, 0-0 SEC) were paced by another brilliant performance from Miali Guachino, who threw a complete game, allowing just five hits and striking out 10 Cowgirls (10-5, 0-0 SLC). With her performance on Wednesday, Guachino took over the national lead in total strikeouts, standing at 89 so far this season.

Despite back-to-back hits by the visitors to open the first-ever game in the new Ole Miss Softball Stadium, Guachino showed poise under pressure, calmly generating a foul out and two strikeouts to strand two runners in scoring position.

That sparked the Rebels immediately, as Jaden Pone delivered the first hit in the new stadium with a single down the left field line, before Aliyah Binford etched her name in the record books with a two-run home run.

With the lead in hand, Guachino returned to the circle, promptly striking out the side in the second inning. Her teammates nearly gave her more run support in the third inning, after loading the bases with no outs, but McNeese managed to escape unscathed.

That wouldn’t be the case in the fourth inning, as the reigning SEC Freshman of the Week, Mackenzie Pickens led off the inning with a double. Taylor Roman quickly followed suit with her own RBI double to make it 3-0. The Rebels would tack on additional run with an RBI groundout from Angelina DeLeon.

McNeese wouldn’t go quietly and put pressure on the Rebels in the fifth inning. The Cowgirls loaded the bases with one out, but a short fly out to left field and a pop up cleared the danger. Guachino would handle the Cowgirls for the remainder of the game, reaching 10 strikeouts in a game for the fourth time.

Ole Miss is back in action on Friday for day one of the Ole Miss Classic. Play begins at 10:30 a.m., with the Rebels scheduled for two games at 3:30 p.m. against Nicholls and 6 p.m. CT., against South Alabama.
