STARKVILLE, Miss. – Ole Miss football capped off a historic regular season with a dominating road win over in-state rival, Mississippi State, 38-19, on Saturday.
The Rebels accounted for 545 yards of total offense and 359 passing yards, the most by the Rebels in the Egg Bowl in both categories since 2020.
With the victory, Ole Miss recorded the first-ever 11-win regular season in Ole Miss football history. This marks the second 11-win overall season including the 11-2 campaign in 2023. Ole Miss now has its third consecutive Egg Bowl victory, the first three-peat for the Rebels since 2002-04.
Hear what Lane Kiffin, TJ Dottery, Kewan Lacy, and Trinidad Chambliss had to say after the win.
What an awesome day," Kiffin said. "Just to watch our players celebrate at the end was amazing. I told them last night, as you get older, you get joy from others, especially your children, which players a lot of the times are similar, and I just wanted them to get to 1-0 today. Just like every time we've been in this stadium, I loved watching them go over there to the fans with the Egg Bowl trophy and be able to celebrate. On top of that, for them to win 11 regular season games is amazing. We talk a lot about what Coach [Pete] Carroll used to say, 'to do things better than they have ever done before'. We just did that and no one in the entire state has ever had an 11-win regular season. So that's pretty cool, especially in the SEC, it's never been harder and deeper than it is now.
DEFENSIVE EXPLOSION
Junior linebacker TJ Dottery, along with senior safety Kapena Gushiken, led the Rebels in tackles with nine apiece.
Just staying within the locker room," Dottery said. "We had a lot at stake as a team, trying to be the first team in the state to have an 11-win season and with spot in the CFP.
Defensive end Da'Shawn Womack had a career-high 2.0 tackles for loss, one solo sack, one forced fumble and one QB hurry, alongside four total tackles. Will Echoles accounted for 2.0 TFL, along with a solo sack of his own with two QB hurries and one crucial pass breakup early, which led to the first career interception for defensive end Princewill Umanmielen.
The returning guys from last year's team all has a chip on our shoulder," Dottery said. "We all grew as leaders. Everybody that came in, from transfers to young guys, we took them in and showed them what we needed to do.
NO ONE IS STOPPING LACY
Running back Kewan Lacy had 143 yards and one touchdown on 27 carries. His 20th rushing score of the season ties him for ninth in Ole Miss career history.
It feels great," Lacy said. "We just worked so hard to get to this point, being 11-1, it just feels great. Just doing it with my teammates as well. I love it.
Lacy is the first Rebel ever with 20 rushing TD in a season and is now one of only 12 rushers in SEC history to do so.
We're focused on getting better every day, for moments like this one right here," Lacy said.
CHAMBLISS FINISHES STRONG
Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss had his best passing performance as a Rebel, with 359 yards and four touchdowns on 23-of-34 passing. This marks his seventh 300-yard passing game in 10 starts this season.
We played great," Chambliss said. "I had a good game, but there is still a lot I can clean up for sure.
The Ole Miss receiving corps had an all-around great day with four receivers tallying more than 65 yards receiving. Junior Cayden Lee hauled in seven catches for 77 yards, while D'Zhaun Stribling tallied two TDs and 66 receiving yards. Deuce Alexander and Harrison Wallace III both tallied a touchdown, with 94 and 72 receiving yards respectively.
This team has battled all year," Chambliss said. "Our one loss is to Georgia, on the road, by one score. I feel like we definitely earned it and we deserve to be in the College Football Playoffs.
