Soccer Downed by No. 3 Mississippi State in Magnolia Cup Battle

10/18/2024 | Soccer

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole miss soccer dropped its home match Friday night against in-state rival Mississippi State by a score of 0-2. The Bulldogs were lifted by a brace from Zoe Main.

Head Coach Molly Rouse's thoughts on the match:

"To battle the way that we did in a game that we knew was going to be emotional, we knew would have a lot on the line especially at this point in the season, and to compete as hard as we did against the No. 3 team in the nation was super encouraging."

On the message to the team going into the final week of regular season play…

"We just have to stay the course and continue to build on the things that we are seeing in the training field. That's probably the most physical game that we've seen all year and those are things that we have to be able to bring to the training ground to better prepare for matches like this."

Mississippi State started fast jumping out in front just 63 seconds into the match. The Bulldogs were awarded an early corner kick in which Ally Perry received the cross. Perry delivered a ball to Main who found the back of the net to put State up 1-0.

The Bulldogs grasped to a one goal lead until the 87th minute when Main found the scoring column again to give the Bulldogs a two-goal cushion.

Ole Miss hung in the fight in an extremely physical match and generated four shots on goal, but the Rebels were unable to crack open the scoring column.

The Bulldogs held the advantage in shots and shots on goal. Corner opportunities were even at four each.

Goalkeeper Shu Ohba made eight saves in the match giving her seven games this season with six or more stops.

Ole Miss returns to action next Thursday, October 24, in the final week of the regular season. The Rebels will travel to Norman to face new SEC opponent Oklahoma. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. CT on SEC Network.
