Peach Buzz: Rebels Ramping Up

12/18/2023 | Football

OXFORD, Miss. – When No. 11 Ole Miss takes the field on Dec. 30 against No. 10 Penn State in the 2023 Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, it will have been just over five weeks since the Rebels beat Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl to close the season. With such a long layoff, Lane Kiffin and his staff have worked to make sure their team gets the most out of bowl practices, and that they're ready to go when the lights come on in Mercedez-Benz Stadium.

That begins with a bit of Penn State prep this week as Trey Washington and Caden Prieskorn explained when they met with the media on Monday.

"It kind of starts this week. This is kind of the bye week heading into the game," Washington said.

A lot has happened since the Nov. 23 victory over the Bulldogs to secure Ole Miss' second 10-win season in the past three years, and though they haven't taken the field since then, the Rebels have managed to build even more momentum.

Numerous current Rebels have announced their intentions to return for the 2024 season, and even more future Rebels have announced their intentions to hop aboard. As blue chip recruits and the top names in the transfer portal make their way to Oxford, the 2023 squad is doing its best to stay focused on the task at hand.

"It's definitely exciting. There's definitely a lot of buzz in this program," Prieskorn said. "But we know as a team we have a job to do, to go 11-2 for the first time in school history."

The coming test against the Nittany Lions is a massive opportunity for the Rebels. They can make history by becoming the first 11-win team in program history. They can also set the 2024 squad up for success with a New Year's Six bowl win.

"We see the recruits going around. We can feel the buzz in the environment, the atmosphere, and we're excited for the future," Washington said. "But we're really focused on this bowl game and excited for it."

As Ole Miss looks to maximize its bowl prep, it can be easy to lose sight of the immediate future in favor of the more distant future. But for the Rebels, working hard during these few weeks serves to meet both goals.

"I think the focus of improvement is still happening around this time. That's something we may have lacked in the past years," Washington said. "I think we're getting better, and I've really liked these last few practices."
