Rebel Lineman Earns Honor for Second Straight Year
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southeastern Conference has named Ole Miss' Javon Patterson to its 2018 Football Community Service Team, the conference announced Wednesday morning.
The SEC names a Community Service Team for each of its 21-league sponsored sports, looking to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to his community through superior service efforts.
Patterson, a senior from Petal, Mississippi, was a four-year starter on the Ole Miss offensive line, appearing in 42 total games in his career, including 36 consecutive starts. He is a member of the NCAA DI Football Recruiting Ad Hoc Working Group and was a two-time nominee for the Wuerffel Trophy, as well as a member of the 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
Patterson helped start Patterson's Footlocker, a collection effort to gather new socks for homeless shelters in Mississippi. Patterson, along with other members of Ole Miss' Student Advisory Committee helped collect over 6,000 pairs of socks that were shipped out to communities all over the state of Mississippi.
Other volunteer pursuits for Patterson include volunteering his time with the Special Olympics, participating in Reading Across America Day, as well as assisting with the yearly Ole Miss Athletics Adopt-A-Basket initiative during Thanksgiving. Patterson also has visited with patients at Batson Children's Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi.
