Football Drops Egg Bowl to Mississippi State

11/22/2018 | Football

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss struggled on both sides of the ball Thursday night, losing 35-3 to No. 18 Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl at Vaught-Hemmingway Stadium.

Prior to the game, Ole Miss honored the 19 members of its senior class in a ceremony on the field.

Despite the defeat, A.J. Brown further cemented his Ole Miss (5-7, 1-7 SEC) legacy, breaking the Rebels' single-season record for receptions, hauling in his 85th catch of the year early in the second quarter.

Ole Miss moved the ball into MSU (8-4, 4-4 SEC) territory on its opening drive, but Montez Sweat sacked Ta'amu on third down to halt the Rebels and force a punt. The Ole Miss defense came through with a stop of its own, forcing a punt after just one Bulldog first down.

The Rebels benefitted from an illegal equipment call against the Bulldogs on their following drive. The flag came on an Ole Miss punt and resulted in a first down for the home team. However, on the following play, Ta'amu was hit during a quarterback run and fumbled. The Bulldogs capitalized on the turnover as Kylin Hill punched in the game's first touchdown from nine yards out. Mississippi State doubled its lead on its following drive as Nick Fitzgerald scored on an eight-yard run.

Ole Miss moved the sticks once on its following drive when Ta'amu hit Elijah Moore for an 11-yard gain. Though the drive stalled after that, the Rebel defense came through with a three-and-out on the other side of the ball.

The Rebels then used a 14-yard rush by Isaiah Woullard and a 20-yard connection between Ta'amu and DaMarkus Lodge to set up for a 32-yard Luke Logan field goal to make it a 14-3 game.

After trading three-and-outs, Mississippi State drove down for another score just before the end of the half. The Rebels looked to have a red-zone stop, but on third down, Javien Hamilton was flagged for pass interference. Fitzgerald hit Deddrick Thomas for a nine-yard touchdown on the following play to put the Bulldogs ahead 21-3 at the break.

The Ole Miss defense opened the second half with a stop after a tackle for no gain by Myles Hartsfield on 3rd-and-2. However, Ta'amu was intercepted on the second play of the ensuing drive. The Bulldogs again found the end zone off of the Rebel turnover, taking a 28-3 lead on a nine-yard Fitzgerald run.

Freshman Matt Corral took the reins on the following drive. The Rebels moved into MSU territory thanks to 21-yard rush by Woullard and a late hit call against the Bulldogs, but the drive ended when a Corral pass intended for Moore fell incomplete on fourth down.

After coming up with a defensive stop on MSU's next drive, Corral connected with Brown for a 33-yard gain to move into plus-territory. The freshman signal-caller nearly had a big touchdown strike to Lodge, but MSU's Maurice Smitherman won the jump ball in the end zone for the interception.

Ole Miss responded defensively with a three-and-out, and it appeared as though the Rebel offense would take advantage of it. Corral linked up with Brown on a long reception, and the Rebel receiver pulled three MSU defenders with him into the end zone. After the play, the benches cleared and both entire teams were called for unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. When the dust had settled, Jamal Peters, Cameron Dantzler and Willie Gay Jr. were ejected for Mississippi State and C.J. Moore was dismissed for the Rebels.

After a review, it was determined that the game clock had hit zero and the third quarter ended before the ball was snapped on the would-be touchdown from Corral to Brown. Corral was sacked twice to start the fourth quarter and the Rebel drive ended.

Mississippi State responded with a touchdown drive, ending in a 1-yard score on the ground by Aeris Williams.

The Ole Miss offense was unable to respond the rest of the way and the game ended 35-3 in favor of the Bulldogs.
