HOOVER, Ala. - The Ole Miss women's golf team completed first round play Friday at the SEC Women's Golf Championship at the Greystone Legacy Course in Hoover, Alabama.
"I think overall the girls played great today," head coach Kory Henkes said. "A couple of them are a little disappointed in the way they finished. Down the stretch, I think we finished 6-over on the last two holes so that's a little disappointing because we had it on cruise control for a bit until the end."
Freshman Martina Flori (Montecatini Terme, Italy) led the way for the Red and Blue, firing a 1-over par 73 on day one. It was a day where Flori carded three birdies and got up and down on 13 other holes.
"Today I played well from tee to green," Flori said. "I struggled a little on some tee shots, but my putting was really good today. I was able to make a few really important putts around holes 11 and 12."
Flori was under par for much of her round until closing it out with back-to-back bogeys. The freshman looks forward to bouncing back tomorrow and sinking those close putts.
"I was 1-under until 17, but it's okay I had a good round on a hard golf course," Flori added. "Tomorrow, I'm looking forward to playing as well as I did today and putting well too. Hopefully I will finish better and shoot under par."
"She said she gets excited for bigger events," Henkes said. "She played well. We knew it was coming because she's an awesome player; she's just struggled at times this year. It's exciting to see her back where she belongs shooting scores she's capable of shooting. The sky's the limit for her."
Other notable rounds on the day came from senior Alison Hovatter (Meridianville, Ala.) and junior Maria Toennessen (Grimstad, Norway) who both carded 2-over par 74s on the first 18 holes. Hovatter scored three birdies on the day, while Toennessen added one of her own.
The Rebels hit the course again tomorrow morning on the first hole at 8 a.m. and will be paired with players from Texas A&M and Arkansas. Fans can follow along with live scoring via GolfStat throughout the event.
"Overall it was a good day for us." Henkes closed. "We had a lot of good things out of Marti, Maria and Ali so we're looking forward to building off that momentum tomorrow."
