Ole Miss Football Postgame Quotes
Ole Miss vs. UT Martin
Vaught-Hemingway Stadium â€" Oxford, Miss.
Sept. 5, 2015
Ole Miss Head Coach Hugh Freeze
Opening Statement …
"It was a good first day for us. UT-Martin head coach Jason Simpson is a great friend of mine. The score was a little lop-sided. I told Simpson afterwards that I am not sure what I could have done differently, and he was great. To be excited for all of young kids to get in and make plays, and to see them enjoying the game of football, it is very rewarding. This game is a grind and I am just really happy that all of them could get in. They were able to get some quality minutes that they will need as the season goes on."
On the Chad Kelly's performance…
"I thought Chad Kelly's performance was really solid. Kelly did miss a touchdown throw, and probably could have thrown one a little bit better on the fade to Laquon Treadwell early in the game, but outside of that I think he had a solid day. We will get back to watching film, but I felt pretty good about him out there."
On Laremy Tunsil …
"I am not privy to any information on that. I know that our university cooperates with the process in any of these situations, fully. Because of this I am not privy to any of that information."
On Robert Nkemdiche being able to play both sides of the ball …
"Robert Nkemdiche is a tremendous athlete. Anytime we can use the kids within our team to be successful, we try to do that. Robert is definitely one of those guys that will help in any way that he can, and he is able to help us in a lot of areas."
On Laquon Treadwell's return…
"He looked explosive, but it was an average performance. It was really good seeing Laquon Treadwell get tackled and be able to bounce back up, but he just has to get back out there and get some more plays. I probably have done Laquon an injustice in preparing him because I have been a little bit protective with his injury. Now I think these first few games will help him get back in the flow. If he had any sufficient play it is my fault because we have not let him go against contact a lot."
On Jaylen Walton…
"Jaylen Walton has the big play ability. We talk about explosive plays in our offense. In this league if you aren't able to create some explosive plays you will not be able to perform offensively. Jaylen definitely showed that ability in the touches he had."
Ole Miss Student-Athletes
#10, Chad Kelly, QB
On being back on the field in a real game
"It felt great. Being out there with my teammates we put in a long, long year of work. This season could be a great season so I'm excited to be able to go out there with great fans, great coaches and great teammates."
On being under a microscope during the fall camp QB competition
"You just have to keep focused, put in as much work as you can because at the end of the day it'll pay off. Just keep focused, keep doing the right thing and everything will pay off."
On his good group of receivers and what it means to have them
"We have weapons all over the field. I feel like we have a great team, and we just have to make sure we're all hitting on all cylinders every play and all 11 players doing their job so we can have a great season."
On his favorite type of throw to make
"[jokingly] All the deep balls, [serious] any ball we can complete and get positive yards is a great ball and as long as we keep on working we'll be successful."
#5, Robert Nkemdiche, DL
On his touchdown reception …
"We put it in a couple days ago. When they called it, I said that if I get it, I'm scoring. It was my first offensive play since freshman year. He put me in, and told me to go to the flats."
On the defense...
"We played all right. We had a lot of errors where we could have done better. It was the first game. We're getting our chemistry together. We can get in and watch film to eliminate the negative plays to get ready for Fresno State.
On Coach Dave Wommack's standard for the defense…
"It's extremely high. He's hard to make him give you a compliment. It's good to have that in a coach. You're always looking for areas where you are lacking. You always want to find an area where you're not doing so good and fix that. He sets the bar high."
UT Martin Head Coach Jason Simpson
On the game …
"There were not a whole lot of positives to say about it, Ill be honest with you. That's the worst resemblance of defense that we have put on in the field in 10 years. It's embarrassing. You don't just miss tackles."
On the final score…
"They are good, and I appreciate the hospitality. They have a lot of good players over there but 73â€"3? That's not acceptable. Like I told our team "You are what you put on the field." Let's not hide from it, lets not say its ok, lets not accept some of the mismatches and stuff like that. We are a better football team than that, and we didn't play very well. We have four days to get better. We'll come in tomorrow, and we have a lot of stuff to work on."
On moving forward…
"They don't have a choice. If they don't come in that building tomorrow like I told them, its my job to find them other ways to get ready to play. It doesn't matter if it's a senior or a freshman. We will find 11 guys that are ready to play."
