Rebels Close Action at Cougar Classic

CHARLESTON, S.C. - In a weather delayed final round, the Ole Miss women's golf team finished in 17th place with a three-day score of 905 (298-303-304-905) to close action at the 2014 Powerade Cougar Classic. Senior Stani Schiavone (Bangor, Pa.) led the Rebels in the final round with a 2-over par, 74 good enough for a 30th place individual finish.
Arkansas claimed the team title with a tournament score of 846, including firing a tournament-low 279 in the final round. Duke's Sandy Choi claimed medalist honors with 54-hole score of 11-under par 205 (69-68-69 -205). There was a three-way tie for second with UCLA teammates, Alison Lee and Bronte Law, and Wake Forest's Sierra Sims - as each carded a 10-under par, 206 for the tournament.
Head coach Michele Drinkard was pleased with the play of Schiavone throughout the tournament.
"Stani (Schiavone) played solid and had a lot of good opportunities this tournament," said Drinkard. "She continues to impress me with her poise and her mindset on the golf course and I look forward to seeing how that yields in results."
For the second consecutive day, Schiavone led the Ole Miss squad. The Pennsylvania native again demonstrated her consistency, despite challenging weather conditions in the final round. The senior made par in all, but two holes on Tuesday. For the tournament, she posted five birdies but made par or better on 46 of 54 holes.
"Madisen and Sofia saw good improvement this tournament as well," said Drinkard. "The future is definitely bright for both of them, as well as our team. We now have three weeks to continue to improve. We need to start executing better and hitting more greens to give ourselves an opportunity for birdies."
Freshman Sofia Idoyaga (Buenos Aires, Argentina) played her best round of collegiate golf in the final round, firing a 3-over par 75, which included a team-best five birdies. Madisen Bentley (University Place, Wash.) also played solid round, carding a 4-over par 76, which is her best round since donning the Navy and Red this fall.
Junior Abby Newton (Katy, Texas) recorded four birdies on the round including back-to-back birdies on No. 4 and No. 5 as she closed with a 7-over par 79, while Alison Hovatter (Meridianville, Ala.) closed with a 9-over par 81.
The Rebels will take some time off before next hitting the links at the UNC Tar Heel Invitational (Oct. 10-12) hosted by North Carolina at UNC's Finley Golf Course.
