Rebels Open Play at Jim West Challenge

BOERNE, Texas - The Ole Miss golf team opened up action at the Jim West Challenge on Sunday in Texas. The Rebels are sitting in ninth place with a score of 25 over par -- 314. Senior Stani Schiavone (Bangor, Pa.) and junior Alison Hovatter (Meridianville, Ala.) are sitting tied for 30 in the individual standings with rounds of 6-over par 78
Head coach Michele Drinkard shared her thoughts on the play of the Rebels after Sunday's opening round.
"Defense of this course is small greens and of course the wind," said Drinkard. "We had trouble adjusting to the 15-20 mph winds and got frustrated with the putting surface. We can't do that and expect to play well. Tomorrow we will play 36 holes because of bad weather arriving on Tuesday. I would like to see us take the challenge. Take in the information and make the decision to commit to our shots."
Schiavone drilled three birdies on the afternoon, including two on the back nine. Hovatter was fairly consistent on the round and was 1-over on the front nine.
Maria Toennessen (Grimstad, Norway) and Texas native Abby Newton (Katy, Texas) each closed the round at 7-over par 79. Newton had one of the highlights of the round with an eagle on No. 10, while Toennessen posted two birdies and saved her best golf for late shooting 2-over par through the final nine holes. Taelor Rubin (Raleigh, N.C.) was 10-over par 82 in the first round.
Junior Kaitlin Voll (Alpharetta, Ga.) played as an individual in her first tournament this fall. In her first tournament, Voll carded a 6-over par 78 with two birdies.
The Rebels will play 36 holes tomorrow as inclement weather approaches the San Antonio area. Ole Miss will be paired with Kent State and Illinois. Fan can follow the live action here.
