BLOG: Veteran Defenders Key Turnaround for RebelsBLOG: Ole Miss Seniors Prepare for Next StepATLANTA, Ga. - The No. 9 Ole Miss Rebels returned to practice and visited Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite Hospital, as bowl week continued in Atlanta.
Before practicing at the Georgia Dome, the team's 21 seniors visited Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite Hospital. They visited with patients, signing Ole Miss books and Chick-fil-A Bowl shirts for patients, warming their hearts and brightening their days.
"It was a great opportunity getting to hang out with kids that might not get the same opportunities as us," senior defensive lineman Lavon Hooks said. "It brightened my day, just being able to give back. I think it brightened their day, too, getting to play and hang out with some people they may see on TV and look up to."
The day's activities began with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Breakfast. Pro Football Hall of Famer Aeneas Williams was the featured guest speaker for the event, and he spoke to the players about focus and motivation.
The Ole Miss Landshark defense then took center stage, as defensive coordinator Dave Wommack was joined by junior defensive end C.J. Johnson, senior cornerback Senquez Golson, senior safety Cody Prewitt, graduate student linebacker Deterrian Shackelford and junior cornerback Mike Hilton for second of three press conferences leading up to the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on Wednesday.
"When he came in, he gave us a standard to live up to, and it just took us two years to live up to that standard, to be able to execute to his standards," said Prewitt of Wommack. "When I think of him, I think of a genius. He can sit down and write down an offense in a heartbeat and he does it every game.
"It's a matter of us going out and executing his game plan, and I can trust all my teammates, we can trust everybody on the team to put forth 110 percent effort, so it was a matter of us truly buying in to what the coaches were selling to us. And this year, we bought in more than any other year."
Wommack and the players discussed their bowl week experience and previewed the much-anticipated matchup between the nation's best scoring defense and nation's second-best scoring offense. They also looked back on their regular season and looked ahead to what a win over TCU would mean for the program.
"I think all year this team has taken a business approach going into every football game," Johnson said. "It's kind of a reward, but at the same time, it's kind of a business trip, but at the same time, you get to play in a New Year's Six Bowl, which is almost as big as playing in the college playoff to know that you're at the elite level. That's what we have been trying to do.
"Both of us, Senquez and I, when we were recruited in high school, said we wanted to come to this school to change the face of the program, and we went from seven wins our sophomore year, eight wins last year, to nine wins this year, and hopefully to get 10 wins, so I guess it's a reward, but at the same time, this team has a business approach to things."
Ole Miss will wrap up bowl preparations with a final walk-through in the Georgia Dome, ahead of its matchup with No. 6 TCU in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on Wednesday (11:30 a.m. CT, ESPN).
Other activities Tuesday include a joint press conference featuring Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze and TCU head coach Gary Patterson. Both teams will also compete in Football Feud, a football version of the popular game show "Family Feud," as part of the Georgia Power Chalk Talk and Football Feud event. The winner of Football Feud will score the final point in the five-day, five-event bowl week challenge and take home the coveted championship belt.
