Toennessen Leads Rebels at Tar Heel Invitational
10/11/2014 | Women's Golf
Note: Play suspended until 8 a.m. on Sunday morning
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore Maria Toennessen (Grimstad, Norway) led the Ole Miss women's golf team in second round action at the Tar Heel Invitational, firing a career-best, even-par 72 in second round action at Finley Golf Course.
Although the Ole Miss team was able to finish its round, play was suspended at 3:25 (ET) due to inclement weather in the Chapel Hill area. The 12 groups that were still left on the course have three-six holes remaining. Play will resume at 8 a.m. on Sunday with the final round beginning immediately afterwards.
Toennessen, who fired a 79 in the opening round on Friday, responded and was consistent throughout the second round. Starting on No. 10, Toennessen started the day with a birdie on No. 11 and made par on the next 15 holes with just one bogey on the day on No. 9. The sophomore started the day quite strong and was 1-under par through 16 of her 18 holes.
The Norwegian native's round of 72 ties her career-best round - a mark she has now hit twice in her young collegiate career. She last posted a 72 in second-round action at the 2014 Rebel Intercollegiate at the Ole Miss Golf Course.
"Maria played a solid round of golf today by sticking to her process," said head coach Michele Drinkard. She has strong targets off the tee and played with a mentality that she was going to get it done and the proof is in her statistics. She made 15 greens in regulation and was 2-of-3 on saves to make par."
As a team, the Rebels responded by posting a round of 307 on Saturday. Taelor Rubin (Raleigh, N.C.) and Abby Newton (Katy, Texas) each fired a 5-over par 77, while Madisen Bentley (University Place, Wash.) and Alison Hovatter (Meridianville, Ala.) were 9-over par 81 for the round. As a squad, the Rebels posted eight birdies with Bentley and Newton leading the way with three birdies each on the round.
'Tomorrow as a team our goal is to play with this same mentality that Maria showed today and that Alison has achieved, said Drinkard. "We will play with an attitude that we can and we will."
The Rebels close action at the Tar Heel Invitational tomorrow. Final round action will begin at 9:15 with a shotgun start. Follow live action here.
