Manning Named As Finalist For Connerly Trophy

Two record-setting sophomore quarterbacks and a glue-fingered senior receiver are the three finalists for the 2001 Conerly Trophy presented by Cellular South, company President Hu Meena announced Tuesday.
The finalists for the 2001 Conerly Trophy, as determined by 60 media voters from across Mississippi and listed alphabetically, are:
ROBERT KENT: Sophomore QB, Jackson State University from Indianola, MS, passed for 3640 yards and accounted for 40 TD's (31 passing, 9 rushing), set school records in passing, completions, total offense and TD's, SWAC leader in passing and total offense, rated 2nd nationally in I-AA total offense, #3 in passing.
ELI MANNING: Sophomore QB, Ole Miss from New Orleans, LA, set 10 school records thru 10 games including season TD passes, most TD passes in a game (6) and season total offense, passed for 2662 yards and 27 TD's while throwing only 6 interceptions and completing 64% of his passes, rated 6th nationally in 1-A passing.
T.C. TAYLOR: Senior WR, Jackson State University from Magnolia, MS, set JSU single season receptions record with 84 catches for 1234 yards and 11 TD's, a converted quarterback who has played receiver for only two years, ranked 5th nationally in 1-AA total receiving and receptions per game.
"Clearly, these are three deserving players who have had terrific seasons," said Cellular South President Hu Meena. "Mississippi has long been known for great football talent and this year is certainly no exception."
The winner will be announced at a banquet on December 6, 2001 at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. NFL Hall of Famer Bart Starr will be the keynote speaker. For ticket information, contact the Museum at 601-982-8264.
