Men's Tennis Competes at All-American Championships

AUSTIN, Texas - James Shortall of the Ole Miss men's tennis team dropped a close match to Pawel Gajdzik of Baylor, 6-4, 7-6(5) in the first round of qualifying at the ITA Men's All-American Championships Tuesday. Shortall and teammate Vikrant Chada also bowed out in first round doubles.

Shortall and Chada, playing in their second grand slam tournament together, lost a tight three-set match to the team of Brent Horan and Shaun Madden from Texas A&M. The Rebel duo took the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6(5), but the Aggie tandem won the second and third sets 6-4, 7 5 respectively for the victory.

The Rebels will have Martin Sjoqvist and Chada in the main draw, singles, which begins Thursday. Sjoqvist advanced to the finals of the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational this past weekend in Tempe, Ariz.

The All-American Championships is the second leg of the collegiate grand slam. The main draw will consist of 64 players and 32 doubles teams.

First round -- Horan/Madden (TAMU) def. Shortall/Chada (OM).
