Volleyball Surges to 3-1 Win over Northern Arizona

OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss volleyball program kept the winning start to the season going, downing Northern Arizona, 3-1, on Saturday evening at the Gillom Athletics Performance Center.
The Rebels (2-0, 0-0 SEC) secured the program's first 2-0 start to the season since 2021, recovering from a first set loss to down the Lumberjacks (0-2, 0-0 Big Sky).
Shayla Meyer led the team for a second consecutive night, tallying 18 kills. Jaidyn Hartsfield notched her first collegiate double-double, tallying 10 kills and 17 digs, while Vivianna Samaniego went for career-highs with 40 assists and 16 digs. Carly Paugh finished with a career-best six blocks alongside eight kills on .615 hitting.
The Rebels opened the day with momentum, quickly building an 8-3 advantage behind a pair of Meyer kills. However, Northern Arizona would not go away, not letting the Rebels pull away, even after the hosts secured a 17-13 advantage. The Lumberjacks answered with an 8-1 run to take over the lead at 21-18. Ole Miss answered with three kills from middle from Paugh and Ryea Jackson, but the Lumberjacks managed to hang on to take the set, 25-23.
Despite the initial loss, the Rebels showed early resolve. A quick 7-4 lead was built behind several Lumberjack service errors, as well as an ace from Meyer and kill from Hartsfield. The visitors would have no answer for the offensive attack, as Ole Miss hit .375 in the frame. A back-breaking 8-0 would be the difference though, as Meyer, Jorda Crook and Paugh contributed with kills, while the defense added two blocks to increase the lead to 24-15. Meyer would add the final kill just one point later to take the set, 25-16.
For the third consecutive set, the Rebels surged to an early lead, this time by a mark of 5-1. Crook delivered all three kills in the run and it gave the Rebels another commanding early advantage. The Lumberjacks scrapped together a rally attempt, eventually tying the set at 22-22. However, Meyer and Crook continued to roll, combining for 12 kills in the frame, with the former punctuating a 3-0 run to take the third set, 25-22.
The visitors delivered one last gasp in the fourth set, fighting to create a highly competitive frame. Both sides increased the defensive intensity, holding each other under .100 hitting for the set. Hartsfield propelled the Rebels to an early 10-7 advantage behind two aces and a kill, but each time the Rebels had a chance to pull away, the visitors responded. The Rebels built leads of at least three points on four occasions, but the Lumberjacks rallied to tie the match at 13-13 and 22-22. Ultimately, a critical error by NAU put the ball into Crook's hands at the service line, where she delivered an ace and forced a bad set on her next serve to end the match, 25-22, in favor of the Rebels.
The Rebels will wrap up the three-game home swing and complete the Ole Miss Volleyball Invitational on Sunday, hosting LMU at 2 p.m. CT. The match will be streamed via SEC Network Plus.
