Baseball Weathers Delay, Beats Nebraska to Advance to Regional Final
5/31/2026 | Baseball
LINCOLN, Neb. – Ole Miss' 18th-ranked baseball team dropped No. 20 Nebraska, 6-3, in a two-day affair to advance to the Lincoln Regional final.
With the win, the Rebels (38-21) will face the winner of this afternoon's game between Nebraska and No. 22 Arizona State. That game will begin at 7 p.m. CT.
The game began on Saturday evening but got suspended after the eighth inning due to lightning strikes in the area and ongoing rain. The final inning played out on Sunday afternoon.
Rebel first baseman Will Furniss went 3-for-5 to lead Ole Miss' batters. Furniss has achieved three hits six times this season, extending his team lead. Hayden Federico and Dom Decker added two hits each, the former of which has six hits in the past two days. Federico, Furniss and Decker have been Ole Miss' best hitters in the regional, with six, five and four hits, respectively, the past two games.
Owen Paino provided run support with a team-high three RBI after a double and a walk. Brayden Randle also provided a hit that drove a run in, adding to his strong weekend.
Getting the start on the mound, Taylor Rabe excelled once again for the Rebels by securing his fourth quality start of the season. He worked 6.0 innings, fanning nine batters while allowing only one run. He's struck out 36 batters in his last three appearances for an average of 12 per game.
Rabe and Nebraska's Ty Horn were engaged in a pitch-for-pitch duel through the first three innings. Ole Miss garnered three hits to Nebraska's one after the first third of the game, but neither team had a baserunner past first base.
The bats awoke briefly after Nebraska struck first in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out solo homer. Despite the Cornhusker run, Rabe remained composed with five strikeouts between the fourth and fifth inning.
Rabe's efforts on the mound translated to the plate. Furniss got the sixth inning started with a single, followed by a hard knock from Federico to send Furniss to third. The hits for the Rebels signified their respective second hits of the game. Owen Paino arrived with a deep shot to right center, doubling while Furniss and Federico gave Ole Miss a 2-1 lead.
The bats stayed alive in the sixth for Ole Miss. Austin Fawley walked, while Paino advanced to third off a wild pitch. Randle's heroic weekend continued when he knocked a single into right field to send Paino home, giving the Rebels a 3-1 lead.
Nebraska filled the bases with only one out in response. Back against the wall, Rabe fanned his ninth batter of the day in eight pitches for the second out. After yet another battle, Nebraska grounded to Decker at second to strand three runners and come away with a clean inning.
Nebraska gifted Ole Miss with a pair of runs by walking five Rebels in the seventh. Decker and Judd Utermark scored with Paino and Fawley at the plate, respectively, giving Ole Miss a 5-1 lead going into the bottom half of the inning. After a scoreless inning from Nebraska, Furniss answered the call once again with his third hit of the evening in Ole Miss' half the eighth, sending Decker home from second.
Nebraska answered with a two-run homer off JP Robertson in its half of the eighth, but Robertson responded with his fourth strikeout of the game to end the frame. Ole Miss still held a 6-3 lead. This is when the game was suspended due to rain, with Robertson's final stat line reading four strikeouts in 2.0 innings.
On Sunday, Hudson Calhoun came into the game with two runners on in the bottom of the ninth. Despite that, a grounder to Utermark forced a double play while Paino shut the game down with an unassisted putout at second.
With the win, Ole Miss will gear up for the regional final this evening at 7 p.m. CT against the winner between Nebraska and Arizona State, which is slated to begin at 2 p.m. CT this afternoon.
