OLE MISS HEAD COACH PETE GOLDING
Opening Statement:
"It was a very disappointing performance in all three phases. It started on the first play of the game and never stopped. I'm not taking anything away from Kirby and Georgia. That's a really good football team. We just didn't help ourselves, so we have to go back and look at everything. You always do when you get your butt whooped, but I didn't see that coming, I'm not going to lie to you. I felt we had a good week of practice and our preparation was good. We didn't do a good enough job coaching, and we didn't have them ready to play. That's not the product we want to put on tape, and that's not who we are. We're going to have to go back to work and fix a lot of things. Hats off to Kirby and Georgia. That was a butt whooping."
On how penalties impacted the second quarter's momentum:
"I'm not sure that it impacted the end of the game, I know that wasn't your question. It definitely felt like we could never get a rhythm or anything, couldn't put positive plays together in any of the phases. So, it did feel like alright maybe here is a break, right here is a spark. Great interception and here is the penalty, we get them in third down and you feel like you get another stop. They definitely didn't help, obviously that wasn't the end result because of those two things, but it was for sure why we could never get any momentum in the game at any point it felt like. Even for the second half, we came and said don't focus on the scoreboard, let's come out here and we go three and out, and start driving on offense, and end up turning the football over as well. We just could never stack anything in all three phases, and we really couldn't catch a break, and we couldn't help ourselves. Yea, those definitely don't help, when you create a turnover and you get a flag. The hit was clean, the timing of it and all that. I will be interested to hear the response, I think it was more of the shoulder drive into the ground, I would assume will be the response. You know the target area was fine and the timing of it was good, but we will see what they say."
On message to the fans for the rest of the season:
"Obviously, we have to put a better product on tape for them and they showed up and they were loud. It was an electric atmosphere to come into and you can tell from the very first drive. People want to cheer for things that look the way that they are supposed to and are exciting to watch. There was nothing about that that was exciting to watch. And I can assure you, no one is more disappointed in that than I am. I know they're disappointed and it's our job to go back out there and work and put a better product on tape."
On the CFP odds and not being completely out of the CFP race:
"I think that's how you set it up from an offseason standpoint: what you're putting on the billboard and what your message is. We never talk about a national championship. We talk about a championship mindset, what it takes to compete for championships, what it looks like every day and how you will be held accountable. You have to be responsible for the things you do Monday through Friday. There's never been a banner up there, but obviously players come here with the expectation to compete for a championship. In order to do that, you have to do what champions do, and that takes a lot Monday through Friday. Our focus will go back to what we can control. That's where we get lost around here, in my opinion. At times we worry about things we can't control. All we can control is coming back in here tomorrow, evaluating this tape and getting it fixed, and that starts with me. We can't control right now what the playoff committee thinks. We have to get ready for Oklahoma, and in order to do that, we have to fix what we put on tape, because we will get exposed if we don't. I'm really big with those guys on focusing on what we can control, and all we can control is our preparation and our plan and getting these guys ready to play a better football game."
OLE MISS QB TRINIDAD CHAMBLISS
On what went wrong for the offense:
"Man, just couldn't get things going. I couldn't get drops going. They brought a lot of pressure. They got home, you know, on four sacks. So, I just couldn't get going. I mean, they just want a lot from us, so it's tough to kind of get into the flow of that when you're, you know, extending plays or trying to at least."
On being surprised by Ole Miss' struggle:
"I would say it's surprising, the outcome of the game and how we started as an offense. It's unacceptable, and it's not Ole Miss football. It's not our standard. Clearly, we weren't as prepared as we thought. It's just tough and disappointing."
On moving forward from this loss:
"We're just having a short memory about this. But we still have to soak in what we did wrong. I know this feeling sounds repetitive whenever we lose, but it is what it is. You have to look back, see what went wrong, and figure out how to get better in those areas. Then we go from there and try to have a positive mindset this week and for the rest of the season. You don't want the team to feel sorry for themselves or feel like the season's over, because honestly, I don't think our season is over. We just have to have a positive mindset going into the week."
On losing momentum/accountability:
"Momentum is definitely huge, and it's real. We just couldn't get it at all tonight. We started off with five plays, then I think a three-and-out, or a quick drive to start the game. We have to do better starting the game and setting the tone, because against a team like Georgia, if you fall behind like we did, six or seven minutes into the game and you're down 14-0, that's tough. You don't want to be behind in those moments. And like you said, they had a lot of momentum, and that's tough to come back from, even at home, even for some really good teams. We just have to do a better job offensively of starting the game fast, setting the tone and putting pressure on their defense. It starts with me as a quarterback: extending plays, making the right throws, being accurate with the ball. I'll have to be better with that."
GEORGIA HEAD COACH KIRBY SMART
Opening Statement:
"I thought it was a total team effort tonight. Our guys came in focused. We talked about being on the hunt and being the aggressor, and the game was that way from the start. Our defensive coaches had a great plan, and our offensive coaches did a great job of staying aggressive. We wanted to own the line of scrimmage, and I thought we did that. We need to keep going, because the games just get bigger from here. To say that wasn't a big win would be wrong. This is a tough place to play, against a quarterback I have tremendous respect for, and Coach Golding is a great coach. Tonight wasn't their night, it was ours. Our guys played really hard, and I'm proud of them."
On what has worked so well the last two weeks:
"We're a good team, but we're a good team that's a week away from humility. We played on the road last time and beat a good team at night. They're a really good team too, and then we didn't take care of business the next week. How you handle success says a lot about you, and our guys are starting to believe in each other and believe in the plan. I don't think it's about who we played or any of that. It's about the culture and leadership they bring to their week, and that's not going to be any different next week. We've got a good team coming to Athens, and we have to be ready for them. We're beat up and banged up, but so is every other team in this league. So it's on to the next."
On the rushing attack:
"That makes the game what it is. If you can run the ball, it makes play action easier. Physicality is the name of football, and it allows Gunner (Stockton) to take shots and do all the things he does well as a quarterback. The combination helps. We couldn't do it without a great offensive line, some good running backs and a great coaching staff. Look at our offensive staff. We scheme people up pretty well in the run game, and it showed tonight, through both physicality and scheme."
On what he learned about the team tonight:
"It's just another road in the journey, knowing that we can go into tough places and play tough teams. You can't read too much into it. People will say they went into Ole Miss, and Ole Miss has won however many games in a row at home. Ole Miss has had some bad games and some really good games, a little bit of both. I think everybody can look around the SEC and say, 'Where's the consistency?' But nobody is 100 percent consistent. We've had our inconsistencies. So it's about who's going to finish November with the most consistency, who's going to continue to get better. I've learned that our team is player led, cares about each other, and it meant something to them coming into this stadium tonight."
GEORGIA QB GUNNER STOCKTON
On connection with WR Talyn Taylor:
"It was awesome. That was very cool. I was trying to get the ball to him. It was neat to see him play this game."
On what the win says about this team:
"We are trying to get better each week. I think that showed this week. We are going to enjoy it and have fun. We have to get better for the next few."
On what it felt like walking off the field tonight:
"That was cool. Our fans travel great. It was pretty wild. It is a cool part to enjoy."
On RB Nate Frazier:
"Like the first play being explosive. He fought hard. He plays for the team and it definitely shows by the way he runs the ball."
GEORGIA OL EARNEST GREENE III
On what it feels like as an offensive lineman to exert their will on the other team:
"It feels awesome. I feel good. You don't get too many second chances in life, so when you do, we want to make sure we take advantage of the opportunity."
On what the team did for motivation this week:
"We have a mantra, 'dawgs gonna be dawgs' so as long as we focus on ourselves and our own personal execution we will have ample success, and tonight's the perfect example of that."
On the feeling walking off the field compared to the last time last season:
"We're extremely grateful for our fans and how well they travel. They're supportive and show up for everything we have. It's just joy and excitement. Not many fans travel like Georgia fans, so it was a really cool atmosphere."
On playing their most complete game of the season:
"We talk every week about playing our first full four-quarter game, and honestly, I feel like we still didn't do that today. It's really about getting back to the drawing board tomorrow, correcting everything we can and getting ready for next week."
GEORGIA ILB RAYLEN WILSON
On getting redemption after last year's loss to Ole Miss:
"Last year left a bad taste in our mouth. Our only plan was to go out there and hunt and get the win."
On the defensive gameplan against QB Trinidad Chambliss:
"We executed the game plan, trapped him in the pocket and tried to not give him anywhere to go. That was the plan, and we executed it."
On how it feels to be a leader in the locker room:
"It feels good just because they all look at me. We all try to play as a group when we get on the field. I try to lead the defense and the team as a whole. It's a great feeling, and I love hyping them up before we go out there."
On if the team played a complete game tonight:
"It was pretty close. There's still a lot to improve on and this team can get a lot better."
GEORGIA DB KJ BOLDEN
On how tough it was to not play versus Auburn:
"It was tough to not be out there to help your teammates. That is always going to hurt. I am just happy I could be out here today and contribute in any way."
On coaches counting on the secondary:
"It starts at practice. If you put the work in at practice and your coach can rely on you to do what you have to do, then in the game it shouldn't be anything. I challenged the DBs before the game. I told them, 'That's probably the best quarterback you're going to face, so let's go out there and get better. Let's prove to the world that we can stand our ground and actually play some real football.'"
On S Khalil Barnes:
"KB [Khalil Barnes] is a hard worker. You never see him doing the wrong thing. He is one of those guys that is always doing the right thing. He cares so much about the team, it doesn't matter what his job is. He always does it 100% so I love it."
On if they feel like they played a complete game:
"I feel like we could have put up 60. We got a little relaxed. We could have pitched a shutout. I don't have regular standards like everybody else. Our standards are pretty high here. We just have to keep getting better. We have to let this game go and move on, because next week we have a big game."
