GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Despite showing tremendous fight, the Ole Miss volleyball program came up short at No. 5 Florida, falling 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.
The Rebels (8-12, 2-7 SEC) were paced by nine kills and five digs from Jaidyn Hartsfield against the nationally ranked Gators (17-2, 8-1 SEC). Ryea Jackson also added a career-high three service aces.
The Rebels and Gators both got off to strong starts offensively, as Jorda Crook led the way starting a perfect 3-for-3 on swings. The Gators were able to respond and create some slight separation, leading 15-12 into the technical timeout. The Rebels continued to spread the offense around, getting Melia Johnson and Hartsfield involved, but they could not overcome the deficit, falling in the first set, 25-21.
After quickly falling behind 4-1, Jackson delivered a strong run of serve, tallying her second ace of the match and helping the Rebels rally to retake a 5-4 advantage. Despite carrying that lead into a 10-9 advantage, the Gators punched back, going on a 6-0 run into the technical timeout. The momentum from that run would propel the Gators into taking the set, 25-15.
Despite the deficit, the Rebels would not quit, pushing out in front with an 8-6 advantage behind kills from Johnson, Jackson and Sophie Taylor. However, the Gators responded with a critical 9-1 run, taking a 15-9 lead into the break. While the Rebels were able to successfully cut the Gator advantage to four at 19-15, Florida would pull away from there, taking the set 25-18.
The Rebels return home to open the final homestand of the season, beginning with the first of four straight on Friday, Oct. 30 against Mississippi State. The match will get started at 6 p.m. CT and will be streamed via SEC Network Plus.
