AUBURN, Ala. – The Ole Miss volleyball program was unable to bounce back from an early deficit, falling 3-0 at Auburn on Friday night at Neville Arena.
The Rebels (8-11, 2-6 SEC) were paced by eight kills from Shayla Meyer and a career-high 20 digs from Bella Bonanno, but were unable to overcome the Tigers (12-8, 2-6 SEC) offense.
The Rebels got some solid early swings from Meyer, but found themselves in a 9-5 hole in the opening set. Out of the timeout, the Rebels faced more of the same, as the Tigers were able to balloon the lead to 18-9. The Rebels were able to generate some late momentum, as Melia Johnson got going with four kills in the frame, but the Rebels ultimately fell, 25-16.
The second set began with a much quicker start from the Rebels, who built a 4-0 advantage behind an emphatic block from Meyer and Ryea Jackson. However, the Tigers immediately punched back, going on a 7-0 run to force a Rebel timeout. The Tigers quickly took control of the set, taking a 15-6 lead into the technical timeout. While the Rebels were able to record a 7-2 run to get back in the set, Auburn pulled away, winning 25-16.
A quick 3-1 start by the Rebels created some life, as the Rebels got a pair of kills from Jaidyn Hartsfield and two more from Jackson to build a 10-9 lead. However, the Tigers punched back with a 6-0 run to take a 15-10 lead into the technical timeout. The Rebels would not go away though, cutting the Tiger lead to 18-17 with two more kills from Hartsfield and a block from Keirstyn Carlton and Jorda Crook. Despite a back-and-forth final to the set, the Rebels were unable to break through, dropping a narrow 25-22 final set.
The Rebels wrap up the brief road trip with a visit to No. 5 Florida on Sunday. The match will get started at 12 p.m. CT and will be streamed via SEC Network Plus.
