Volleyball Stifles Wofford in 3-0 Victory
8/31/2025 | Volleyball
ATLANTA, Ga. – The Ole Miss volleyball program delivered a standout defensive performance, rolling to a 3-0 win over Wofford and completing the Georgia Tech Classic on Sunday at O'Keefe Gymnasium.
The Rebels (2-1, 0-0 SEC) stifled the Wofford (0-3, 0-0 SoCon) offense into hitting -.102, the lowest hitting percentage by a Rebel opponent since Sept. 4, 2009 by Alcorn State.
Gabi Placide led the Rebels for the third straight match, tallying 13 kills on a .429 hitting percentage, while adding nine digs. Cammy Niesen also shined, tallying 22 digs in the three-setter, good for the second most of her career in three-set matches.
From the start of the match, the Rebels brought energy and jumped out to an early 9-3 lead. While Wofford found some success on their service game in which they tallied four service aces to kickstart an 8-0 run, the Rebels quickly regained composure. Placide tallied a pair of kills and Niesen notched a pair of service aces as the Rebels quickly swung the match back in their favor, leading 18-14. The defense polished off an active first set with 19 digs and two blocks, while holding the Terriers to a -.069 hitting percentage as they took the first set 25-21.
Much like the first set, the Rebels surged to an early advantage, taking a 10-3 lead. Carly Paugh helped spark the run with three kills and it put the Rebels in complete control. Placide continued to shine with multiple kills and the Terriers would get no closer than 14-10. A 5-0 run put the set on ice, as the Rebels used kills by Melia Johnson and capitalized on Wofford errors to comfortably secure a 25-14 win.
The Rebels never took their foot off the gas, exploding for an 8-0 run to open the third set. Wofford showed composure to stay in the match, cutting the lead down to 10-7, but the Rebels regrouped with a timeout and began to put the match out of reach. The freshman duo of Johnson and Keirstyn Carlton helped extend the advantage with multiple kills and the lead ballooned to 23-14. Kills by Jones and Placide finished off a 25-17 win.
The Rebels are back in action next weekend, traveling to Brookings, S.D., for the Jackrabbit Invitational. The Rebels will open against the hosts South Dakota State on Friday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. CT. The match will be streamed on the Summit League Network.
