Track & Field Heads to LSU for Battle on the Bayou

3/27/2025 | Track and Field

BATON ROUGE, La. – Ole Miss track & field will hit the road for the first time this outdoor season with a trip to LSU for the Battle on the Bayou, held this weekend on March 28-29.

MEET NOTES

• There are 12 other schools competing alongside the Rebels and Tigers this weekend: Alabama, Arizona, Baylor, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Mississippi State, Missouri, Penn State, Southern California and Texas A&M.

• A handful of Rebels headed to LSU this weekend are making their outdoor season debuts. A notable debut for the women is All-American sophomore Akaoma Odeluga in the hammer, discus and shot put. Some notable debuts for the Rebel men are freshman Max Armstrong and junior Carson Turner both in the 400-meter, 800-meter and 4x400-meter relay, junior Gabe Scales also debuting in the 800-meter with addition to the 1500-meter, and All-American junior Arvesta Troupe in the high jump.

• Ole Miss is set to receive its first outdoor 800-meter races from seniors Jo-Lauren Keane and Cassie Williamson. Keane and Williamson, once teammates at West Virginia, have both broken 2:05 in their careers outdoors, with Keane's best a 2:04.88 from the opening round of the NCAA East Regional as a Rebel in 2024, and Williamson's a 2:03.49 also at last year's East Regional but as a Mountaineer.

• The Rebels are fresh off an impressive season opening meet at home for the 2025 Ole Miss Classic last weekend, where the men and women collected 11 total event wins.

• Ole Miss enters this weekend with 18 marks or times within the NCAA top-25 at this early part of the outdoor season, 11 from the Rebel men and seven from the Rebel women.

• Leading the way for the Rebels last weekend was All-American sophomore Mensi Stiff with a win in the shot put that ranks third in the NCAA rankings (16.80m/55-01.05) and a runner-up finish in the discus.

• In the women's 3000-meter steeplechase, junior Hannah Ielfield won at 10:15.94, which currently sits first in the NCAA rankings. Sophomore John Kendricks also added an event win to the Rebels' total last weekend in the pole vault at 5.26m/17-3, which made him the eighth Rebel to clear both 17-feet indoors and outdoors.

• The Rebel men's relay teams delivered standout performances last week, securing victories in both the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter events. The 4x1 squad – composed of junior Joseph Michel and freshmen Jordan Urrutia, Wesley Todd and Tarique Wright – clocked a 39.71 finish, which ranks fifth in Ole Miss history and No. 11 in the current NCAA standings. They are set to compete again this weekend at LSU.

• Todd also played a key role on the 4x400, running a blistering third-leg split of 46.36, that ultimately led the squad to an overall victory at 3:09.91 – the fastest relay at Ole Miss outdoors since 2014.

• Ole Miss went 1-2-3 in the men's hammer, with senior and reigning SEC silver medalist Jake Dalton winning at 67.62m/221-10 – which currently ranks eighth nationally. Junior Bryson Smith took second on a PR of 67.47m/221-4 (No. 8 NCAA), and senior Mason Hickel took third at 63.12m/207-1.

• Freshman Lily Beattie and Katie McFarland found their way into the NCAA pole vault rankings in their outdoor debuts at 4.07m/13-04.25 – currently 21st nationally as well as eighth in Ole Miss history outdoors.

• Sophomore Skylar Soli also had an impressive outing with a third-place finish in the hammer (61.94m/203-02), which ranks 15th in the NCAA. Soli also had a career-best of 14.70m/48-02.75 in the shot put.
