Track & Field’s Akaoma Odeluga Captures Collegiate Lead to Close Day Two in the Bayou
3/29/2025 | Track and Field
BATON ROUGE, La. – Ole Miss track & field sophomore Akaoma Odeluga claimed the NCAA lead in women's shot put to wrap up a weather-shortened but successful final day at LSU's Battle on the Bayou on Saturday.
The weather cut the shot put down to prelims-only, but that didn't matter for Odeluga, who sent her second attempt out to a massive two-foot career-best heave of 18.93m/62-01.25. That not only won the competition by more than five feet, it shattered the previous meet record set by Ole Miss' own Jalani Davis in 2024 (18.54/60-10) and it gives Odeluga – the reigning World U20 champion – a near four-foot possession of the NCAA lead this outdoor season.
Fellow sophomore Mensi Stiff finished fourth at a season best of 17.01m/55-09.75, placing her sixth in the current NCAA rankings. Junior transfer Opal Jackson took ninth at a season best 15.28m/50-01.75, which moves her to No. 10 in Ole Miss history outdoors.
All American junior Arvesta Troupe made his outdoor season debut with a runner-up performance in the men's high jump at 2.20m/7-02.50. That mark moves him up to third in both Ole Miss history outdoors and the current NCAA rankings. Troupe is one of four Rebel men to reach the 7-2 mark both indoors and outdoors.
The women's triple jump also featured a stellar performance from freshman Madison Martinez. Martinez's overall career-best leap and Ole Miss freshman record of 12.92m/42-04.75 (+0.0) earned her third place and catapulted her to second in Ole Miss history and ninth in the current NCAA rankings. That jump is the best by a Rebel woman outdoors since Olympian Brittney Reese in 2008, and Martinez now stands as one of five Rebel women to leap 42 feet – the first since 2012.
Senior Dieusi Armand also made the finals, finishing eighth with a season best 12.22m/ 40-01.25 (+1.8) that moves her to No. 12 in Ole Miss history outdoors.
In the men's shot put, junior Mason Hickel finished fifth with a career-best heave of 18.52m/60-09.25. The two-foot improvement moves him up to fourth in Ole Miss history and 13th nationally this season, and his performance makes him only the fifth Rebel men's athlete to break the 60-foot plateau outdoors.
On the track, junior Joseph Michel tied his season-best time from last weekend in the men's 100-meter dash at 10.37 (+2.1). His 12th place performance remains 14th in Ole Miss history outdoors and ranks 26th in the current NCAA rankings.
Fellow junior Carson Turner also found his way into the 2025 NCAA rankings with an 800-meter time of 1:48.88 in his outdoor season debut, which puts him 14th nationally.
In the men's 4x100-meter relay, the quartet of Michel and freshmen Jordan Urrutia, Wesley Todd and Tarique Wright took fourth at 39.78, just seven-hundredths of a second shy of their performance last weekend that ranked fifth in Ole Miss history.
Other notable performances from Rebel athletes include senior Iangelo Atkinstal-Daley in the men's triple jump (seventh, 14.78m/48-6, +1.8) and sophomore Mensi Stiff in the women's discus (ninth, 49.32m/161-09, SB).
Ole Miss now returns home to honor its senior class in the final home meet of the season, the 2025 Joe Walker Invite at Prefontaine Stadium on April 4-5. The Rebels will also be sending a distance delegation to the Stanford Invite on April 4th.

This season, she ranks fifth in the United States and 13th worldwide on the absolute women's lists for 2025.𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘁 𝗣𝘂𝘁 | Akaoma Odeluga sets 2025 NCAA lead in women's shot put 🤩
