JOE WALKER CAREER NOTES
• This is the eighth Joe Walker Invitational, which is named for the former Ole Miss track & field head coach who led the Rebels to 11 top-20 national finishes, 124 All-America honors, 12 NCAA individual champions and 60 SEC individual titles during his 30-year career in Oxford from 1979-84 and 1988-2012. Known for his ability to coach elite-level jumpers and hurdlers – and for his warm and caring persona – Walker was inducted into the Ole Miss M-Club Alumni Hall of Fame in 2016 and the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
40 YEARS OF OLE MISS WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
• The 2024-25 season marks the 40th total year of Ole Miss women's track & field, which began officially under head coach Dr. Ken Gibson during his first season in 1985-86.
• Dr. Gibson, a member of the USTFCCCA Coaches Hall of Fame, was the first black head coach in Ole Miss Athletics history, leading the combined Rebel men's and women's track & field programs from 1985-88.
• In its 40-year history, Ole Miss women's track & field and cross country has produced four Olympians (nine Olympic berths, four Olympic medals), 15 NCAA Champions (12 titles), six NCAA runners-up, 135 First or Second-Team All-Americans, 38 SEC Champions and 41 SEC runners-up. Under 10th-year head coach Connie Price-Smith, the Ole Miss women have produced five of those Olympic berths, 13 NCAA Champions (10 titles), five NCAA runners-up, 95 First or Second-Team All-Americans, 26 SEC Champions and 22 SEC runners-up.
• Members of Dr. Gibson's first women's team in 1985-86 included: Cathy Acquaviva (Frankfort, Kentucky); Darlene Calvin (Kalamazoo, Michigan); Allana Cummings (Troy, Mississippi); Tara Edwards (Jacksonville, Florida); Teresa Hayman (Jackson, Mississippi); Jennifer Herndon (Waterford, Mississippi); Kelly McLaughlin (Pascagoula, Mississippi); Susan Meriwether (Metairie, Louisiana); Ann Schexnayder (Ruston, Louisiana); and Sonya Varnell (Brandon, Mississippi).
SENIOR DAY
• On Saturday, Ole Miss will honor 21 Rebel senior student-athletes as well as two student managers: Jerricka Ambus, Frankie Amore, Kanon Anderson (manager), Beth Arentz, Iangelo Atkinstall-Daley, Elyas Ayyoub, Benjamin Bayless, Guy Bond, Ainhoa Brea, Mara Burdine (manager), Costen Campion, Jake Dalton, Toby Gillen, Abigail Green, Hannah Ielfield, Jo-Lauren Keane, Ford Maberry, Kyla McLaurin, Gavin Nembhard, Drew O'Connor, Cole Piotrowski, Chase Rose and Gabe Scales.
PREFONTAINE STADIUM
• Ole Miss officially renamed its track & field facility to Prefontaine Stadium with a dedication ceremony two weeks ago at the Ole Miss Classic. The new facility name comes courtesy of a $750,000 gift from Ole Miss supporters Debbie and Andy Prefontaine. The Prefontaines became Ole Miss fans when their son, Kevin, attended the university in the 1990s, with Andy choosing Ole Miss track & field's stadium as the destination for his gift in part as a way to honor his cousin, the legendary Steve Prefontaine, who ran at Oregon and was the crown jewel of American distance running before his tragic death at the age of 24.
• Prefontaine Stadium, previously known as the Ole Miss Track & Field Complex, was built in 2004 and recently received $7.2 million in upgrades in 2017 that can seat 1,500 spectators in its new design. In 2022, a brand-new locker room facility -- the Jerry Hollingsworth Track & Field / Cross Country Facility -- was opened for use as an addition to the overall complex. Both sets of renovations helped the facility shine for the 2022 SEC Outdoor Championships, which helped generate an estimated $2.8 million in business for the Oxford community.
MEET NOTES
• The Rebel women debuted at No. 23 in the first USTFCCCA National Rating Index for the outdoor season, while the men came in at No. 33.
• At Stanford, the Rebels will run in both the men's and women's editions of 5K and 10K races , as well as the women's 3000-meter steeplechase. Each year the Stanford Invite proves crucial for regional qualifying times, as last season seven out of Ole Miss' eight qualifying times at 5K and above were from the Stanford Invite.
• A large majority of the group heading to Stanford this weekend will be making their outdoor season debuts. Notable debuts on the women's side include Sophie Baumann and Sarah Schiffmann in the 5K, while the men feature Toby Gillen and Elyas Ayyoub in the 5K and Aidan Britt in the 10K -- among several others. Making their Ole Miss outdoor debuts are senior transfer Kidus Misgina and sophomore transfer Lukas Ehrle.
• Last weekend at LSU's Battle on the Bayou, several Rebels found their way into the national leaderboards, with nine Rebels entering the top-25 of the rankings last weekend alone.
• All-American sophomore Akaoma Odeluga led the way for the Rebel women with her outstanding performance in the shot put. Her meet record heave of 18.93m/62-01.25 took command of the national collegiate list by three feet, ranks fifth in the United States, 14th worldwide, and it ranks second in Ole Miss history behind three-time Olympian Raven Saunders (19.76m/64-10). That throw earned her SEC Field Athlete of the Week honors, and it launched her all the way to No. 13 in women's collegiate history outdoors. Odeluga is one of just 14 collegiate women all-time to break 62 feet in the shot put outdoors, and alongside Saunders she is one of two Rebel women to do so regardless of season.
• Odeluga also posted a career-best 61.80m/202-9 in the hammer that ranks seventh in Ole Miss history and No. 25 in the NCAA this season. With that performance, Odeluga became the first woman in Ole Miss history and one of only three in collegiate history to break 62 feet in the shot put and 200 feet in the hammer. In that category, Odeluga stands alongside only former Arizona State great Maggie Ewen and current Colorado State senior Mya Lesnar.
• Fellow All-American sophomore Mensi Stiff also found herself in the NCAA ranking in the women's shot put with a season-best heave of 17.01m/55-09.75 that ranks her ninth in the collegiate standings this year, while junior Opal Jackson's season-best 15.28m/50-01.75 from last week currently sits at 50th nationally.
• Freshman Madison Martinez set a record of her own in the triple jump with an overall career-best leap of 12.92m/42-04.75 (+0.0), a new Ole Miss freshman record in the event. Martinez climbed to No. 12 in the NCAA rankings this season and second in Ole Miss history behind Olympian Brittney, with her leap standing as the best by a Rebel women outdoors since Reese in 2008. Martinez is now one of only five Rebel women to break 42 feet outdoors and the first since 2012.
• On the men's side, All-American junior Arvesta Troupe made his outdoor season debut with an outdoor personal-best of 2.20m/7-02.50 in the high jump. Fresh-off his third-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships, Troupe wasted no time moving to the top of the collegiate rankings, currently sitting at fourth nationally while also moving up third in the Ole Miss outdoor rankings. Troupe is one of four Rebel men all-time to reach 7-foot-2 both indoors and outdoors.
• Junior Bryson Smith improved on his hammer PR from two weeks ago with a career-best of 67.79m/222-5 last week that moved him to No. 11 nationally, second in the SEC and fourth in Ole Miss history. Senior Jake Dalton's season-opener of 67.62m/221-10 ranks right behind Smith at No. 12 nationally and third in the SEC, while junior Mason Hickel's season-best 63.17m/207-3 ranks 43rd in the NCAA and eighth in the SEC.
• Last week, Hickel also put together a career-best performance in the shot put at 18.52m/60-09.25, which currently sits 16th nationally and fifth in the SEC. Hickel now ranks fourth in Ole Miss history outdoors, and is now one of five Rebel men to ever break 60 feet.
• In the men's pole vault, senior Drew O'Connor cleared a season-best 5.30m/17-04.50 last weekend, putting him at No. 16 in the NCAA and fifth among SEC competitors. Junior Logan Kelley had a season-best as well at 5.15m/16-10.75 (No. 45 NCAA), while sophomore John Kendricks' season-opening 5.26m/17-3 still sits at No. 27 nationally and fifth in the SEC.
• The Rebel men's relay teams delivered standout performances two weeks ago at the Ole Miss Classic, securing victories in both the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter events. The 4x1 squad – composed of junior Joseph Michel and freshmen Jordan Urrutia, Wesley Todd and Tarique Wright – clocked a 39.71 finish, which ranks fifth in Ole Miss history and No. 23 in the current NCAA standings.
• Todd also played a key role on the 4x400, running a blistering third-leg split of 46.36, that ultimately led the squad to an overall victory at 3:09.91 – the fastest relay at Ole Miss outdoors since 2014.
• Freshmen pole vaulters Lily Beattie and Katie McFarland still hold in the NCAA top-50 at their outdoor debuts of 4.07m/13-04.25 – currently 41st nationally as well as eighth in Ole Miss history outdoors.
• Other Rebels currently within their respective NCAA top-50 event rankings include: sophomore Skylar Soli in the women's hammer (23rd, 61.94m/203-2); juniors Carson Turner (23rd, 1:48.88), Jonathan Stock (27th, 1:49.03) and Landen McNair (49th, 1:49.63) in the men's 800-meter; and senior Iangelo Atkinstall-Daley in the men's triple jump (32nd, 15.33m/50-03.50; +0.8).
Competition is set to begin at Prefontaine Stadium with the decathlon at 10 a.m. CT both days. Several promotions and fan events are in store for this weekend, but fans unable to attend can watch action from both days of the Joe Walker Invite live on SEC Network+.
