Cross Country Set to Open 2024 Season at Memphis Twilight

8/28/2024 | Cross Country

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Ole Miss men's and women's cross country opens its 2024 slate with a short trip up to the Memphis Twilight on Saturday night, hosted by Christian Brothers University at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.

Saturday begins a three-meet regular season for the Rebels, which resumes Sept. 27 at Missouri's Gans Creek Classic before a trip to the high-powered Pre-National Invitational hosted at Wisconsin on Oct. 19. Ole Miss then begins its postseason at Texas A&M for the SEC Championships on Nov. 1, followed by the NCAA South Regional at Florida State on Nov. 15 and back to Wisconsin for the 2024 NCAA Cross Country Championships on Nov. 23.

Both Rebel teams begin the 2024 season nationally ranked in the USTFCCCA Preseason Coaches Polls, with the Ole Miss women opening at No. 27 and the men No. 29. In the preseason regional rankings, the Rebel men are projected to take second in the South Region, while the Ole Miss women currently sit at No. 5.

Ole Miss is under the direction of third-year cross country coach Adam Smith, who led the Rebel women to a national team berth in 2023, their seventh in the last eight years. Ole Miss finished 21st at the national meet last season, which tied for the third-best finish in Rebel women's history.

The Rebels return NCAA All-South Region and Second-Team All-SEC senior Loral Winn for her final season at Ole Miss. Winn enters the 2024 campaign as the Rebels' all-time leader in the 6K with her 2023 All-Region finishing time of 18:52.10, making her the lone woman in recorded Ole Miss history to break the 19-minute barrier.

Also returning from last season's NCAA Championship squad are senior Madison Hulsey, senior Hannah Ielfield and junior Sarah Schiffmann. Other returners include redshirt junior Beth Arentz, junior Sophie Baumann, redshirt senior Jo-Lauren Keane, redshirt sophomore Jenna Kirby, sophomore Adie Luna, junior Frances Luna, junior Samantha Ouellette and sophomore Brooke Preputnick. Newcomers to the squad for 2024 are senior LIU transfer Ainhoa Brea, freshman Alycia Hart and senior Cal Baptist transfer Emilia Mikszuta.

On the men's side, Ole Miss returns All-Region and All-SEC junior Toby Gillen, who is fresh off a First-Team All-America finish on the track outdoors in the 5K. Gillen was Ole Miss' top finisher at the SEC Championships last season, finishing 14th in his first conference meet as a Rebel.

Also returning is fellow All-Region honoree and senior Jack Meijer, who took 13th at the NCAA South Regional.

Other returners for the Ole Miss men include senior Aiden Britt, redshirt freshman Zack Gilbertson, redshirt freshman Aidan Hodge, redshirt sophomore Landen McNair, senior Chase Rose, redshirt junior Gabe Scales, redshirt freshman Stone Smith and redshirt freshman Caden Townshend. Newcomers joining the 2024 Rebel squad are senior LIU transfer Elyas Ayyoub, senior Miami (Ohio) transfer Benjamin Bayless, freshman Samuel Ferguson and junior Maine transfer Evan Thornton-Sherman.
