Rifle Comes From Behind to Defeat Ohio State
11/17/2024 | Rifle
OXFORD, Miss. – In a down to the wire match, No. 8 Ole Miss rifle needed its best performance in air rifle this season to defeat No. 9 Ohio State in comeback fashion, 4711-4708, at Converse Hall on Sunday.
The win signified Ole Miss' first conference win as a member of the Patriot Rifle Conference.
Despite a six-point deficit in smallbore and being without All-American Lea Horvath, the Rebels (4-3, 1-1 PRC), fired a 2376 in air rifle to claim victory over the Buckeyes (3-4, 1-2). It's the highest total in the event this season for the Rebels, as Ole Miss filled the top three in individual performances. All four counted scores were 590 or better.
Gracie Dinh had a career day, claiming the top spot in smallbore, air rifle and the aggregate. She set a season and career best mark in aggregate scoring, contributing 1184 to the Rebels. Her mark was the best on the day by four points.
Jordan de Jesus met Dinh in the top five in the individual aggregate column, finishing fourth with 1178, also a career high for the freshman.
The match began in smallbore, where the Rebels found themselves in an early hole.
Dinh shot a 588 to claim the highest individual tally. She had 32 centered shots en route to her third-straight team high score in the event. It's the second time in that span that her score was the best by any individual in the field.
Regan Diamond, M'Leah Lambdin and de Jesus followed Dinh in scoring. Diamond had a season-high 583 and placed fifth in the event with 24 center shots. Lambdin and de Jesus scored 582 each to round out Ole Miss' score in smallbore.
Ole Miss turned on the after burners after the pause between events.
Dinh came ready right out of the gate, making it halfway to perfection with her first 30 shots all as 10s. She had 28 center shots in that span. Dinh finished with a match-high 596 and came one point shy of tying a career high.
De Jesus tied Dinh with 596, but had two fewer center shots than Dinh, giving her second place in the event. Her performance tied a career high from earlier this season, but her 51 center shots today outdid her previous best of 48.
Diamond joined Dinh and de Jesus on the podium with her 594 score. She's now scored that mark in two consecutive appearances and three so far this season. Her final shot clinched the victory for Ole Miss with under two minutes remaining.
Lambdin added 590 to the Rebels score and finished seventh in the individual column.
The Rebels will enter the break from competition in the win column and get an earned two-month pause. The Rebels will return to the range on Jan. 18 and 19, as they travel to Alaska for a double-header weekend tournament. Ole Miss will face PRC opponent Alaska Fairbanks, as well as Akron and Army on the same days.
