FAIRBANKS, Alaska – No. 9 Ole Miss rifle saw several historic performances on its first day in Fairbanks, Alaska, as it claimed the second spot of the four-team tournament against Alaska-Fairbanks, Akron and Army, on Saturday.

The Rebels (6-4, 1-2 PRC) pieced together two wins on their first day of competition in Alaska, as it shot a team aggregate score of 4725. That mark ties the 10th-best team aggregate score in program history.

In doing so, they tied the fifth-highest air rifle score in the Ole Miss record books after putting up a blistering 2382. Ole Miss gave No. 2 Alaska-Fairbanks a run for its money, but the Nanooks claimed the top spot of the day, only outscoring the Rebels by two points. Akron finished third with 4713 and Army scored 4689.

Audrey Gogniat, in her first collegiate appearance, swept the competition. She registered the highest smallbore, air rifle and aggregate score of the day. She’s the third Rebel to accomplish that feat this season, and second in as many matches when Gracie Dinh did so against Ohio State in the fall finale.

Gogniat tied Ole Miss’ smallbore record with a 594-point performance. She joined Lea Horvath and Kristen Derting as the only Rebels to reach that mark in smallbore. She went on to lead the team and the field with an 1193 aggregate score, which marks the second-highest all-time by a Rebel.

Gogniat’s historic day saw her reach 100 total center shots, which was the best among all individuals in the field. She was the only athlete to score over 1190. Sára Karasová of Alaska-Fairbanks earned the silver medal but was still eight points behind Gogniat.

The match consisted of two relays, of which three counters from each school participated in the first, followed by the remaining two counters in the second. Gogniat, Horvath and Dinh represented Ole Miss in the early relay.

The trio got the scoring barrage started for Ole Miss in the first relay. Gogniat foreshadowed her historic finish after she shot 396 through the first two positions of smallbore, including Ole Miss’ ninth perfect prone score of the year and first of the spring season.

After missing only two bullseyes from the standing position, Gogniat achieved her 594 finish. It was the highest score of the day in the entire four-team field, as she was one of two athletes to break 590 on the day.

Dinh and Horvath followed suit with Gogniat, firing 584 and 583, respectively. The diamond-studded trio put Ole Miss in first place for the event at the end of the first relay, with Akron in second by five points.

Gogniat’s momentum carried into air rifle, where she missed only two center shots through her first 30 attempts. The freshman from Le Noirmont, Switzerland, hustled through the event and paced the Rebels once again with a 599 to claim the No. 1 spot on the individual leaderboard.

Horvath and Dinh complemented Gogniat’s high-scoring day with high scores of their own, firing 595 and 594, respectively. Horvath has yet to shoot below 595 this season after her performance, as the veteran locked up the No. 6 spot on the event leaderboard. The rising star in Dinh upped her air rifle scoring average with Saturday’s showcase and finished eighth in the rankings.

Jordan de Jesus and M’Leah Lambdin kept the Rebels momentum alive at the start of the second relay. The pair fired the two best kneeling position scores for Ole Miss of the day, with de Jesus’ 198 score falling one point shy of tying the school record. Lambdin, who holds a share of the 199-kneeling record, fired a 197.

Lambdin and de Jesus scored 582 apiece to bring the Rebels’ smallbore score to 2343. It’s the third-highest score for the Rebels this season.

Regan Diamond took over as counter for the final showcase of air rifle of the day. The sophomore led the relay squad by tying a season-high 594. Her finish put the Rebels’ performance in the top 10 for the program.

The Rebels are back in action on Sunday, Jan. 19, facing Army and Akron once more before returning to Oxford. The match tournament is set to begin at 11 a.m. CT.
