Scouting WVU
No. 2 West Virginia is a perfect 10-0 this season, tallying more than 4700 points seven times, but have not competed since mid-November. The 19-time NCAA Champion Mountaineers are led by 2016 Olympic 10m Air Rifle Gold Medalist Ginny Thrasher. The senior scored a 591 (smallbore) and 599 (air rifle) last season against the Rebels. In 2018-19, Thrasher averages a team best 1180 aggregate. Juniors Morgan Phillips (1178.2) and Milica Babic (1174.8) complete a solid 2-3 punch.
Last meeting…
Ole Miss tied its second-highest score to that point last January in a dual match in Alaska against then-No. 1 WVU. The Mountaineers won the match 4718-4469. Graduate Jessica Haig tied a personal best of 585 to power the Rebels in smallbore (2322). Then-freshman Emily Cock was the top Rebel (2347) in air rifle with a 591.
Unique finals format…
This match will feature an air rifle final after the match, but it will not count toward totals. The top four from each team will shoot, compared to the top eight in the GARC and NCAA Championships. The format will be used as practice for both teams as they approach the championship season.
Marsha's Minute…
On thoughts on this match…
"The team is looking forward to our match with West Virginia. I really like competing with the top teams – I think it gives us great experience. West Virginia will have their mobile range in the Shell Building, the same arena they used for the GARC Championships last year, which means everyone will get to compete at the same time. The team is coming off a good weekend and has been doing a great job in practice. We just need to focus on the things we've been working on."
On the unique finals format at this match…
"Additionally, WVU will run an air final that will include the top four shooters from each team. The final is used to determine GARC and NCAA individual champions, but is rarely conducted during regular season matches. This should be fun as well as a great opportunity for us."
Loudin goes perfect…
Last weekend, the Rebels (4659) outshot No. 6 Alaska Fairbanks (4657) and then-No. 11 Ohio State. Loudin, a senior from Post Falls, Idaho, accomplished a feat many rifle athletes dream about during the match. She not only scored a perfect prone 200 score in smallbore, but she did so with 20 center shots all marked with an (x). The accomplishment would be similar to pitching a perfect game. Ole Miss and Loudin are no strangers to obtaining 200 points in prone. The Rebels now own at least 16 in program history, with Loudin owning eight of them. She owned the previous best of 16 center shots.
Last match highlights (Jan. 13 vs. Akron)…

Last match highlights (Jan. 13 vs. Akron)…
- A myriad of personal bests on Jan. 13 at the Lt. Hugh W. Wylie Range powered then-No. 13 Ole Miss Rifle to its second highest total in program history (4685). The Rebels recorded top five scores in both smallbore (2323) and air rifle (2362) to down then-No. 12 Akron (4640), in a Great America Rifle Conference dual match on the Ohio State campus.
- The aggregate total of 4685 was only two points away from the record set last season at Alaska Fairbanks (4687) on Jan. 19, 2018. Additionally, smallbore (2323) was the third best in the record book, only two points behind what the team achieved on Nov. 15, 2005 against NC State. The air rifle score of 2362 tied for fifth.
- The Rebels claimed the top five spots in smallbore and edged Akron, 2323-2303, led by rookie Erin Walsh. Walsh recorded a personal best of 582, which is the second-best score posted by Ole Miss this season (Abby Buesseler, 583 fired on Jan. 12). She shot a perfect prone score (200) with 15 center shots, and established a new best in kneeling (193). Other notable performances were junior Alana Kelly (194 kneeling) and senior Randi Loudin (191, standing), who tied top scores. Kelly also fired a 579 personal best.
- Ole Miss outfired Akron, 2362-2337, in air rifle. Junior Hayley Carroll set a personal best with 593 in air, and Buesseler followed with a season-high 592. Senior Harley Gardner (590) hit her highest mark of 2018-19 as well.
- In aggregate, Ole Miss went 1-2-3 with Buesseler (1173), Walsh (1167 personal best) and Zakrzeski (1167).
