Career bests lead to 4685 points in Ohio
COLUMBUS, Ohio – A myriad of personal bests on Sunday at the Lt. Hugh W. Wylie Range powered No. 13 Ole Miss Rifle to its second highest total in program history of 4685 points. The Rebels recorded top five scores in both smallbore (2323) and air rifle (2362) to down No. 12 Akron, 4685-4640, in a Great America Rifle Conference dual match on the Ohio State campus.
The aggregate total of 4685 was only two points away from the record set last season at Alaska Fairbanks (4687) on Jan. 19, 2018. Additionally, smallbore (2323) was the third best in the record book, only two points behind what the team achieved on Nov. 15, 2005 against NC State. The air rifle score of 2362 tied for fifth.
Interestingly enough, UAF also competed at the range on Sunday and fired a 4688, but its score and performances didn't impact the final results between Ole Miss and Akron. UAF remained in Ohio a day after the Rebels defeated them and Ohio State in an attempt to post an NCAA qualifying score. A similar situation occurred earlier in the season on Oct. 13 when Ole Miss recorded a better score at a Memphis-Army dual match in West Point, N.Y., but didn't receive a victory.
Walsh impressive in smallbore…
The Rebels claimed the top five spots in smallbore and edged Akron, 2323-2303, led by rookie Erin Walsh. Walsh recorded a personal best of 582, which is the second-best score posted by Ole Miss this season (Abby Buesseler, 583 fired on Saturday). She shot a perfect prone score (200) with 15 center shots, and established a new best in kneeling (193). Other notable performances were junior Alana Kelly (194 kneeling) and Loudin (191, standing), who tied top scores. Kelly also fired a 579 personal best. Rounding out the scoring were Buesseler (581), Loudin (581), and freshman Jillian Zakrzeski (579 personal best).
Carroll and Buesseler shine in air rifle…
Ole Miss outfired Akron, 2362-2337, in air rifle. Junior Hayley Carroll set a personal best with 593 in air, and Buesseler followed with a season-high 592. Senior Harley Gardner (590) hit her highest mark of 2018-19 as well. Sophomore Kamilla Kisch (589) and Zakrzeski (588) completed the Rebel total. In aggregate, Ole Miss went 1-2-3 with Buesseler (1173), Walsh (1167) and Zakrzeski (1167). Walsh (1167) and Kelly (1161) set yet another pair of bests.
Marsha's minute...
On the strong score…
"Today went very well for us. Both smallbore and air rifle were season bests and our combined score, 4685, is the second highest score in school history, two points off the school record set last year. It is always meaningful when team members fire personal bests and particularly so when so many do on the same day."
On picking up a big GARC win…
"We were of course happy to record our second GARC win of the season. We are now 2-4 in conference competition with wins against NC State and Akron. Losses were to Kentucky, West Virginia, Army and Navy. The GARC is extremely competitive with defending NCAA Champions Kentucky, No. 2-ranked West Virginia and four other Top 10 teams."
Up Next…
The Rebels return to the road for another GARC duel on Sunday, Jan. 20 against No. 2 West Virginia. The match is slated to begin at 9 a.m. CT.
Total Aggregate – 4685
Smallbore – 2323
Air Rifle – 2362
