Scouting the opponents…
  • No. 6 Alaska Fairbanks enters Saturday's match outshooting its opponents in seven of nine matches. The Nanooks are led by JT Schnering and Kellen McAferty, both of whom average over 1170 points a match. UAF boasts the second-most national titles behind West Virginia with 10 in the sport's competitive history.
  • Rhiann Travis will likely be a factor for Ohio State as she has been the team's most consistent shooter in smallbore (580.6 average) and air rifle (589.9 average).
  • On Sunday, Akron features a pretty even squad with Andre Gross leading smallbore (581.2) and Lauryn Cinadr pacing air rifle (588.4.).

Last meetings…
Ohio State: The Buckeyes hosted Ole Miss on Jan. 13, 2018, prevailing 4690-4667. The Rebels set the first of three school records in January of last season with its 4667 aggregate score. The previous record was 4666 set in the 2006 NCAA Sectional. Ole Miss finished the 2018 match with 2363 in air rifle and 2303 in smallbore. Now graduate Jessica Haig led Ole Miss with a 593 in air rifle, one point ahead of then-freshman Kamilla Kisch. Then-junior Randi Loudin paced Ole Miss in smallbore with a 578.

Alaska Fairbanks: Both teams set program records in the Last Frontier on Jan. 19, 2018. The Nanooks fired a match-high 4725, but Ole Miss shattered its program-best score by 18 points to rewrite the record book with a 4687. Then-freshman Abby Buesseler led Ole Miss (2363) with a personal-best 594 in air rifle. Both Haig (585) and then-junior Randi Loudin (583) earned personal bests to pace the Rebels (2324). In addition to firing the best aggregate score in program history, the Rebels earned their second-best smallbore score and third-best air rifle total all-time.

Akron: The Rebels edged the Zips in Oxford, 4645-4633, on Oct. 15, 2017. Then-junior Harley Gardner secured a 578 in smallbore. The Rebels were outshot 2393-2389 in the event, but used a huge push in air rifle (2356-2340). The 2356 was tied for third in program history at the conclusion of the match. Kisch (592) again led Ole Miss in her signature discipline.

Marsha's Minute…
On what the team has been doing since its last NCAA match…
"This weekend will start our spring season. Our last college match was eight weeks ago. Since then we had five team members compete at the Winter Air Gun Championships in Colorado Springs and four compete in state Junior Olympic Championships. The other team members – half the team – has not competed since mid-November."

On what to expect from all the competitors…
"The same is likely true of the shooters on the teams we are competing with. Historically, scores in early January are all over – some competitors will come back refreshed from a break and do above average. Others seem to need a couple weeks to get back into the swing of things. Again, this applies to other teams as well as Ole Miss. We are looking forward to competing at Ohio State. They have a very nice facility and we appreciate them hosting our GARC match with Akron. All three teams we compete with this weekend are strong and it will be good experience to shoot with them."

On progress made in 2019…
"Ole Miss shooters returned to Oxford right after the New Year. Since classes haven't started yet team members have been able to focus on shooting and I feel like everyone has been working exceptionally hard."

Staying sharp and advancing to Nationals…
  • Five Rebels competed in the Winter Air Gun Championships, Nov. 30 – Dec. 2 at Colorado Springs, including 2017 graduate Alison Weisz and assistant coach JP Lucas.
  • Weisz set an event-breaking score of 630.9 in the 10m air rifle women's individual competition. Her two-day total 1257.4 easily advanced her to the six-person final where she won with a 1259.9.
  • Senior Harley Gardner finished 43rd out of 205 total competitors with a 1224.7, just ahead of sophomore teammate Abby Buesseler (1224.5, 45th). NLI signee Claire O'Neel ended the weekend in 50th place behind 1221.9 points. Also cracking the top 60 were sophomore Emily Cock (1221.0, 54th) and freshman Jillian Zakrzeski (1219.8, 59th).
  • Lucas, a nine-time All-American and captain on two national title teams at West Virginia, captured second overall in the 10m air rifle men's team event. He fired a 416.8. Weisz also finished second in the 10m air rifle women's team competition with 419.0 points. Lucas and Weisz advanced and teamed up to earn second place in the mixed team air rifle event.
  • Three Ole Miss rifle athletes posted automatic qualifying scores at state competitions for the National Junior Olympic Rifle Championships in December. Sophomores Kamilla Kisch and Sophia Cuozzo advanced at the Mississippi State USA Shooting Junior Olympic Air Rifle and Smallbore Championships in air rifle, while rookie Jillian Zakrzeski earned automatic scores in both disciplines in the Ohio competition.
  • The Mississippi competition was held at the Ole Miss Rifle Range with a trio of Rebels earning the top three spots in both disciplines. In air rifle, Kisch (591) and Cuozzo (589) secured automatic marks. Cuozzo's score was a personal best in competition. Freshman Erin Walsh fired a 579 and will wait to see if she advances.
  • Kisch narrowly missed an automatic qualifying score of 575 in smallbore with a match-best 574, but has a strong chance for an At-Large invite. Walsh (570) and Cuozzo (569) rounded out the top three.
  • Zakrzeski tallied wins in both events during the Ohio state competition at the University of Akron's Robert A. Pinn Shooting Range. The redshirt freshman secured a 591 in air rifle and tied her career high in smallbore with a 578.
